Top Target Species
Whether you’re looking to troll for Marlin, deep drop for Tuna, or handline a Sailfish, this is the place to do it. With over dozens of species that you can target year-round, it’s no wonder this place has become one of the top go-to spots on many anglers’ bucket lists.
Billfish
Billfishing in Ensenada is as good as it gets. Sailfish and Striped Marlin are the most common catches because they typically show up closer to shore, but Blue and Black Marlin aren’t too far off. You can target Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish year-round, but the best time to do so is in the summer and fall when the water temperature is between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
The biggest Billfish found off the coast are Blue Marlin. These fish can reach up to 400 pounds, but some have even been recorded at up to 1,000 pounds! Striped Marlin is the smaller cousin of Blue Marlin – but don’t let him fool you. Weighing in around 50–130 pounds of pure muscle, these slim fish put up quite the fight!
Tuna
Big game Tuna species can be caught off of Ensenada’s coast from early summer to late fall. The peak season for Tuna fishing is August and this is when you’ll find the biggest of the bunch. The most sought-after and prestigious ones are Yellowfin and Bluefin, but other frequent encounters include Albacore and Skipjack. Sizes will vary depending on the species, but the biggest and baddest of them all is the Bluefin, averaging anywhere between 200 and 600 pounds.
Yellowtail
Since the 1950s, Ensenada has been referred to as the “Yellowtail Capital of the World.” These fish are the most common catch out of any big game species in the area. Amberjack fishing is solid throughout the entire year but its peak seasons are spring and fall, specifically March and November.
Mature Yellowtail typically weigh anywhere between 15–35 pounds. Yellowtail are a top target species because of their great game qualities and versatility. You can target Yellowtail by bottom fishing, trolling, fly fishing, jigging, popping, and spearfishing.
Need to Know
If you’re fishing from a boat, you’ll need to obtain a valid fishing license. Most captains will provide them for you but keep in mind, not all of them do. The best practice is to always check with your guide before heading out. You can purchase them at most hotels or any local tourism office.
If you plan to fish from land, you don’t need a fishing license. Just be sure to pack sun protection, snacks and drinks, and swimming gear if you plan on taking a dip.
