Freshwater spearfishing for Mullet, Carp, and Tilapia is allowed in some parts of the Colorado River. However, the saltwater scene is more popular than freshwater. You can go after anything from Calico Bass, Halibut, Striped Bass, White Seabass, Mahi Mahi, Yellowtail Amberjack, and Barracuda to Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna.
Spearfishing in California is a year-round activity. The availability of the species may differ depending on the time of year, but you won't end up empty-handed, especially in Southern California. Spearfishing conditions in SoCal are perfect for both professionals and novices alike. NorCal’s waters are more for experienced spearos due to colder temperatures and lower visibility.
When we said that the entire state offered first-class spearfishing spots, we weren't joking. From Caspar Bay, Salt Point, and Monterey to Catalina Island, San Diego, and Los Angeles, the coastline is studded with prime spearfishing destinations. Exploring the inshore waters and reefs requires at least a 6-hour trip, whereas an offshore pursuit is a full day quest.
If you're 16 or older, you'll need to purchase a valid fishing license. Apart from the license, pay attention to protected species, and size and bag limits, too. Make sure you're familiar with the latest rules and regulations before heading out. You can always consult with your spearfishing instructor about the laws, equipment, and species as well.

Although we didn’t fish with children, it would be fun for the older ones. The trip is not long and you can catch a lot of fish. This is a catch and release trip so perfect for people who are not looking to keep their catch. Would be a very fun trip for kids as well as adults.

Don’t be the dummy who thinks shorts and a tank top is a good idea. Check the weather and dress appropriately. Bring a styrofoam cooler with dry ice at the bottom and ice on top of the dry ice to leave in the car. Gallon size ziplock bags, paper towels, hand soap with pumice (ie: Fast Orange), and a change of clothes for afterwards are a good idea, too.

Definitely book a guide if you are wanting to fish Crescent City. We fished from the jetty, the surf and booked a guide. We caught a couple fish from the shore but limited it out with 60 fish when we went out with our guide. With the price of fish these days, you almost pay for your trip in the amount of fish you bring home.

Yes, the spot Captain Brad took us to was about a 15 minute boat ride from Carnelian Bay. We fished in 150 feet depth and caught many Macinaw Trout. We kept three and released the others.
