Fliegenfischen Angeln in Nord Georgia

Can't stop thinking about the beautiful mountain ranges or the incredible fishing opportunities in the “Peach State”? Oh, Georgia, Georgia on your mind? Then it’s time to experience a North Georgia fly fishing trip for yourself. Grab a buddy and come wet a line for the Trout that everyone is talking about!

You’ll be able to fish for Trout year-round. Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout are stocked regularly in the 4,000 miles of freshwater Trout streams, so there’s always something good to catch, especially in the spring and summer.

What to Expect

North Georgia is the place to go for an off-the-beaten-track experience. Imagine this – just you, and your rod, reeling in fish after fish in a stunning natural setting. Of course, if you’re visiting the more famous rivers, there’ll be more anglers around you. This is great if you’re a beginner fly fisherman/woman as there’s always someone to help if you need it.

Trout are the main attraction here, including Rainbow, Brown, and Brook. You can also reel in Largemouth, Smallmouth, Striped, and Spotted Bass. Catfish are a popular freshwater catch in North Georgia, too.

For a more remote experience, stay at a fishing lodge that has access to less pressured waters. Feeling adventurous? Head through the forests to find your own stretch of water. It’s best to head out with a guide who has experience and knowledge of the area. They’ll know the best places that are available to fish– you don’t want to accidentally trespass on private land!

Each river and lake offers something different. The Tuckasegee and Toccoa River are perfect for beginners to start on, whereas the Noontootla Creek is more suited for experienced fly anglers. The Soque River is a good medium between Tuckasegee and Noontootla, with large Trout found here. If a trophy catch is the aim of your trip, you’ll need to head to Chattahoochee River, where the state record for Brown Trout was hooked, weighing in at20 pounds and 14 ounces..

Freshwater Striper can also be found in the basins of theChattahoochee and Chestatee Rive. They average at 20 pounds, so you’ll need a higher weight rod to hook them. For Spotted Bass, head to Lake Allatoona.

How to Prepare

To make the most of your time, it’s highly recommended you fish with a guide. They’ll be able to take you to productive spots and will provide you with all the necessary rods and reels. This is perfect if you’re flying in and are worried about the weight of your luggage. Ask your guide if waders are provided.

Bringing your own gear? You’ll need to match your rod to the water you’re fishing. A 5 wt rod is perfect in Noontootla Creek, but a 4 wt is needed in smaller streams.

Everyone over 16 will need to purchase a freshwater Georgia fishing license before the trip begins, as well as a Trout license for some waters.

Packyour bug spray, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses, and you’ll be ready for an adventure in North Georgia fly fishing to your heart’s content.

Swing by for an incredible adventure that you’ll be talking about for years to come. Be warned – once you’ve tried fly fishing in North Georgia, you’ll be back before you know it!

Do yourself a favor if you haven’t fished Carters Lake and hire a guide. I caught two strippers each over 36 inches plus a half dozen spotted bass on a four hour trip with Captain Len Slay on Carters Lake in October 2023

Great. This year (2022) was a little on the hot (above average) side and there is always the chance of thunderstorms when that hot!

Worth every penny to have an experienced guide. The float trip was so much nicer than just a wade trip.

I would start with a guided outing to learn where the fish are and what the fish a biting. When you see it with your own eyes, it is different than reading about it on the internet.
