If you’re planning on spending your next vacation deep sea fishing Dominican Republic, then congratulations, you’re going to have an amazing time! If you’re still undecided, we’ve got a long list of reasons you absolutely have to visit this sportfishing paradise. It reads a little something like this: Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo… You get the picture.
There’s more to Dominican Republic’s big game scene than the fish themselves, though. You’ll struggle to find a better sportfishing fleet anywhere in the Caribbean. Custom sportfishing boats pack like sardines into Marina Cap Cana, and only the best captains stay afloat in this highly-competitive market. The DR is also famous for its family-friendly fishing trips, making it the perfect way to get the little ones into the sport. It really is one of the best fishing destinations in the world.
Deep Sea Fishing Spots
You can catch all of Dominican Republic’s big game species year-round. There are some very special times and places to visit, though. Most of these are within easy reach of Punta Cana, and trips rarely need to last longer than eight hours. The biggest Blue Marlin are caught in the summer around FADs in the northeast of the island. Hundreds of Blue Marlin are released each season off Macao Beach, 3 Rocks, and the Pink House. These are Punta Cana’s “Big Three” but there are many more spots still being discovered.
But what if you want to catch record Billfish without even leaving the coastline? Come in White Marlin season, of course! During the spring, White Marlin can be caught by the dozen just a couple of miles from land. They make their way through the Mona Passage, right past Punta Cana itself. Even a half day trip will get you on multiple hookups, and double-digit releases are standard on longer trips.
Deep Sea Fishing Techniques
The deep sea fishing Dominican Republic is most famous for is trolling. Colorful spreads of teasers and trolling lures are the standard setup here, as bait can be difficult to buy. You can also fish for Rainbow Runner, Bonito, and other baits on your trip. Bigger boats usually have tuna tubes to keep them alive.
If you do catch baits, you will often have the option to kite fish. There are even some captains who specialize in guiding groups towards Sailfish and Marlin on the fly. This is usually done by bait-and-switch fishing, making full use of those signature teasers.
Need to Know
Billfish are catch-and-release only in Dominican Republic. Everything else can and will be kept unless you agree otherwise. Most captains won’t mind releasing fish, but they’ll need to know ahead of time to set things up right. You don’t need a fishing license in DR, whether you’re on a charter or not. Everything is set up so you can just show up and enjoy, and DR has earned its reputation as a no-hassle vacation spot. There are still stories of foreigners being overcharged at the dock, though, so book ahead of your visit to ensure a stress-free trip.
