Explore some world-renowned offshore hunting grounds onboard the deep sea fishing charters Costa Rica has to offer. The Pacific waters host numerous IGFA tournaments, and it’s easy to see why. A range of monster fish live in the crystal clear waters year-round! Add to that some exciting action on the Caribbean side, and you have yourself an enviable choice to make.
Some of the creatures you can target on your big game trip include Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, two types of Tuna, and Amberjack. But that’s just where it starts. Try trolling for these beauties on the way out to the deeper grounds, before entering into battle with some true stars of the sea. Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin all rub shoulders with Sailfish – and double-digit hookups are not uncommon.
If that wasn’t enough to get your heart set on Costa Rica, it’s estimated that the fishing conditions are good 95% of the time. Head to Playa Flamingo and Herradura from spring through fall. The central hubs of Quepos and Los Sueños are best reserved for fall through spring – with a quick early summer Marlin run, too. If you’re heading south, then the fishing will be similar to the central coast.
To get offshore, you’ll usually want to spend a full day, at least, on the water to make the most of it. However, you can get to the deepwaters more quickly in the north. The further south you are, the longer it will take, so bear that in mind when booking your trip. This fishing is also best reserved for those of you with some experience with a rod and reel, although Costa Rica’s deep sea fishing guides will help newbies learn the ropes too.

The strong wind made fishing tough, and eventually we had to cut our day short, the Captain said that was an anomaly for this time of year. But we all know that is fishing, a word to the wise check your weather ahead of booking. This crew was awesome and made the trip in bad weather worth it.

Ask questions about the condition of the boat. I assumed that the A/C would be working to help cool our group. The boat we went on the fishing trip was a bit outdated and the AC wasn't working. It was a very hot and humid day on March 13. Make sure to eat something before the trip or take snacks. People that aren't used to the culture might not always enjoy what the boat has to offer for snacks/meals.
