Things started off interestingly, we lost a huge striped marlin after hooking it briefly and seeing it jump out of the water, so the day seemed promising for some bluefin tuna that other charters had been hitting during September. We saw large readings of baitfish columns on the fish finder but there were unfortunately no hits on the multiple riggings that were placed out. My two young boys were getting tired so I asked to head back closer to land and try for some rockfish or sheepshead. Capt Brian agreed to keep the boys excited but as we headed to a new spot he kept trying to find some action. He pointed out some kelp beds and said that he thought he saw a dolphinfish (mahi-mahi) jumping around there. We headed over and found a school of mahi-mahi engaged in a feeding frenzy. My boys and I were awed by the sight of forty to fifty mahi-mahi darting around 10 to 20’ under the blue water. We could the clearly see their blue and yellow shine of them as they attacked prey fish, there was no description suitable except for “otherworldly.” It was literally like watching some of the alien creatures from Avatar, I wish I’d videoed it, but I was too busy casting and catching! For the next 45 minutes we hit multiple mahi with lures as well as live sardines. It was one of the more enjoyable experiences I’ve had. The boys were absolutely head over heels catching fish! Kudos to Capt Brian for never giving up. He even stayed over by two hours to find the mahi- mahi and to allow the boys to hit a few rockfish. I look forward to having Brian guide us again in the near future, he’s a hard working and very gracious guy!
