The water was a little rough on the day of our trip…but Captain Ben made the best of it and we all had a great day. Single dad with four teenage boys. It was the first trip like this for all of us. While most boats on the pier that day had to turn around and come back with a boat load of seasick customers…our captain took it slow going out and thanks to his planning (and a few doses of Dramamine) we caught fish and had a fantastic time. It was exciting for the boys to go out so far that they couldn’t see land anymore and the potential of catching big fish kept them excited.
I was a Navy pilot and have been at sea for six months at a time on two frigates and one destroyer. I can tell you that the crew is safe and makes the comfort and well-being of their customers a priority. The boat is clean and seems very well maintained. The cabin is a comfortable place to retreat and relax during a break from fishing. I felt safe having my boys out there on what I already said was a rough day.
Matt never stopped moving. He was constantly tending to the bait and tackle, keeping the boat clean and organized, and making sure that we had a good time. You could tell that he liked what he was doing and that he wasn’t just going through the motions. He did a great job of making sure my thirteen-year-old understood how the gear worked and how he should be placing his bait in the water.
There is an opportunity to tip the Mate at the end of the trip. The customary amount is 20%...so be prepared but know that if you get Matt as your Mate…it is WELL worth it!
Here’s another tip…if you have the time…enjoy the Catch and Cook at Brotula’s. Matt cleaned the catch for us (mostly Trigger fish and Jacks) and we had an awesome feast at a table overlooking the pier. A perfect end to a perfect trip.
We’ll be coming back to this area next year and the first thing I’m going to do is make sure we book a reservation on the Mighty Fine.
