I took my two young boys (aged 6&7) boys out with Captain Bob for a days fishing out from Port Denarau in Nadi. We had a great time, I’ve been on plenty of charters over the years in NZ, Australia and the pacific Islands. But this is first time I’ve had my sons with me, so it was different. They are both competent fishermen but they are pretty young so I was naturally nervous that if things got too boring or to rough for them they would have a bad experience and not enjoy themselves and ruin my chances of having fishing buddies for the future.
The captain picked up on this requirement a tailored a trip to suit our needs without risking a bad experience for the boys. We trolled out to the main reef and hooked into some nice fish along the way including a massive Barracuda that my oldest boy caught he is still buzzing.
Then we had to decide if we would go out into the open sea or try something else. Unfortunately the weather meant that if we tried for a fish outside the main reef it was going to be very rough. If I was on my own I would have elected to just go for it but in the end I trusted the skippers call that the boys would not enjoy it and it may ruin their day (they had already got their personal best fish by this time so they were happy.
Instead we tried a few deep drops (300 meters) and the boys got to use the electric reel which was perfect to allow them to enjoy the thrill of the catch at such depths.
After some successful deep drops we tried a short troll around some birds a concluded that it really was too rough for the boys to go out wide, so we trolled our way back to the marina and we were back home in time to fry some beautiful Spanish mackerel and Groper fillets for tea.
We caught plenty of fish of 6 different species all told;
Fijian Groper
Barracuda (very large)
Spanish Mackerel
Red snapper
Golden snapper
Cod
Shark
While mother nature didn’t play ball 100% we had a great day that the boys will never forget.
I’m looking forward to having another trip with these guys and this time try some action out wider to see what we can get.
I would recommend them as being up to international standard with experienced skippers who know the territory and the conditions out from Denarau. They also had the intuition to realise that a good day for the boys was the ultimate goal in this trip not just a big marlin or game fish for me.
