We were very excited to try Keys fishing. Having fished in the Midwest for years and trying salmon fishing over the summer, we wanted to try something different. We were flexible in what we were fishing for, and willing accepted any suggestions from our captain. We did let him know we had never fly fished.
Well…we started as a whole day fishing charter. At the mid-day point. (11:15 after a 7:30am start) our captain suggested we return due to weather. It was windy so I am not sure what conditions require a return to shore.
That being said, we had the following concerns….we only fished in two locations. Location one had tarpon somewhere off in the distance. We approached carefully (standard I assume since real instruction was limited) and attempted live bait on one rod. One of the two of us were given a lure to attempt to fish with limited direction. Then we were asked not to fish with the lure..ok. After about an hour, the tarpon moved on so we set up to fish something else. I’m new to sea fishing and snagged the bottom and lost a lure, which I felt bad for, but know how often it happens at home…about 30 minutes later my spouse did the same thing.
Captain had us move sites with much less snag hazards….we caught a few fish and asked about keeping them, we were told we could put them in our cooler….ummmm the one with our drinks and lunch???? Nothing in fishing booker or the conversations with the captain prepared us for this…
As soon as we requested to keep our catch, the captain grew bored and indicated we should probably return due to weather…as it would save us a few bucks. Sadly the last four hours of an eight hour trip are the cheapiest….
Anyway. The water was beautiful, we kept 5 fish 4 porgies and a yellowjack. It might feed our family of 5….
