My father and twin boys had never fished together on a deep sea fishing trip out of Montauk so I went to fishing booker to investigate my options . Capt Al had the only 12 hour trip that I wanted for my family. After booking our trip , capt Al contacted me to find out who would be in the fishing party, (father and twin teenagers) and what kind of fish we wanted to catch. Booking was a snap, 10% deposit on line and immediate confirmation.
Capt Al kept in close communication with me as we neared our trip to make sure the weather was good and gave me clear and concise instructs to the pier.
Our trip was from 5 am to 5 pm and we met on the dock that morning, and by 4:50am we were off and running. Sam, the 1st mate was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, helping all of us in the proper use of the rigs. The equipment on board was in mint condition and worked flawlessly.
Capt Al announced that we were going to start off catching Blue fish. They set up the rigs to go for bluefish and we jigged for 10 minutes and pow, we caught our first 15 lbs blue. That was just the beginning, after catch more blues, he said lets get striped sea bass. They changed the rigs and within 10-15 minutes of jigging some more, my teenage son got a hit! The strapped him in the chair and he started reeling the fish in. This fish gave him one hell of a time and finally, after close to 10 minutes, the fish was finally near the edge of the Boat. To our amazement, when the fish appeared close the the waters edge, I couldn’t believe how large it was. The Capt and first mate coordinated to make sure this big one got on board! 50lbs striped bass was my sons first large catch.
We continued to pull in several more, well over 100 lbs of striped bass to the amazement of my family.
Then the capt said, while checking his sophisticated radar equipment, its time to get some black bass. After changing rods and tackle, we started fishing, not 2 minutes later, we hit a gigantic school of them, pulling up well over 40 fish, sometimes catching 2 at a time. This went on for well over an hour. We kept the larger ones according to local gov. fishing laws and threw back the rest. We had the first mate running back and forth while this fishing frenzy continued. Capt Al made sure we followed the local laws governing with quantities and sizes. I admire a capt that obeys the local laws, its clear that Capt Al had good integrity and was honest.
By 11 am , halfway through our trip , we had caught quite a few fish. What an incredible day at sea so far! Capt Al’s boat the Sea- Fari was very nice, the head was clean, the sitting area on the second deck was comfortable and the fishing area was well organized and had plenty of room for our group of 4 and the capt and mate. The boat was very safe and had emergency equipment and supplies.
The remainder of the day saw more large blues and striped sea bass. Capt Al’s knowledge of the sea, the tides and where the fish were hiding was very impressive. We also talked about the Canyon run and fishing for Blue Fin Tuna for our next trip.
When we returned to the dock at 5 pm, we watched the first mate filet the fish, we had so much we ended up giving half to the capt and his mate.
The Capt didn’t collect the remaining balance for the trip until the end which is a good business practice from my point of view.
We couldnt stop talking about the days events all the way home. What an incredible day and experience on Capt Al’s boat with first mate.
