April 6, 2024, was a beautiful day to go fishing with a beautiful family, Ace (Dad) Marina (Mom), Alex (8 years old) and his sister Amelia (10 years old). Blowtoads ended up being the catch of the day, however, we lost few nice fish in the wash. The water temp is still a bit cool (55 degrees), but fish are starting to show up. There were reports of big blues, black drum, and an occasional sea mullet. We will see the first Pompano soon. It's important when taking children fishing to bring some beach toys and size appropriate beach chairs to help fill in the time between bites. We provide them and more! Speaking of bites, we also provide snacks. Oreos were a big hit today! Coastal Life Outfitters is a strong advocate of teaching children to fish. On Tuesday, April 2. 2024, I had the pleasure of taking Charlie and his son Ethan out to Ft. Fisher for a surf fishing excursion. WIND was the word for the day with SW winds at 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts. This gave us the chance to learn some techniques for reading the beach, holding the bottom in windy conditions with Moving water, casting, and rig tying. We also discussed some of the history surrounding the Fort and its significance during the Civil War. Despite the gusting winds, Charlie hooked and landed a nice Cownosed Ray. It fought more like a fish than a ray, taking Charlie up and down the beach several times before it was landed and released. Between Charlie's skills in adjusting the drag on a 4500 Daiwa Eliminator reel paired with a Carolina Cast Pro CPS Gen 3, 11 foot surf rod rated for 3-6 oz. lure weight, the ray didn't have a chance. The Sinker Guy sputnik sinkers saved the day, helping us to hold bottom in very fast-moving water and the wind. While the fish didn't cooperate today, Charlie and Ethan made some memories, learned some valuable techniques for fishing in the wind, using the incoming waves to help land a heavy fish (ray) and Ethan learned the mechanics of "loading" up a surf rod and sending the bait! Once this cold front moves through and the water and weather settle down, the fishing will start to get hot. The first pompano should start to arrive later this month and greater numbers through the spring, sumner, and into the fall. We should also see a rapid uptick in Red Drum, Black Drum, and Sea Mullet catches as the water warms. Launched out of Wrightsville and the water was GLASS. Quick trip offshore with Steve & Susan. They wanted Trigger & Grunt. They got some nice ones. They even got a bonus 14” Sea Bass! Nice easy start to the season!

Had the pleasure of taking Brett and a couple of his friends out around 8 miles to catch some nice kings. This shld continue on into the first part of nov . Book your 3/4 day trip and lets go fishing.

Great inshore fishing around Wrightsville Beach!

The fall fishing is in full swing with nice big spanish mackerel & king mackerel . Our 1/2 day trips are producing 3 to 4 lb spanish mixed in with the average size spanish mackerle ,and a occasional kingmackerel if we find some bait balls on the beach. The 3/4 day trips in the 10 mile range are producing some nice kingmackerel. . With the weather cooling down the nearshore stuff with the spanish and occasional kings will slow way down in the next week and a half . But making the 3/4 day trip more productive with the kingmackerel in the 10 mile range. The 3/4 day trips shld be awsome from here into the first of nov as long as the weather and wind will Cooperate with us and we can get out .
