What would you recommend to anglers fishing in Honolulu, Hawaii for the first time?

Obviously no guarantees with fishing but I’ve been very happy with my hawaii fishing experiences and even if you don’t catch anything it’s gorgeous seeing the island from the water, especially at sunrise.

You are on an island. When you go out a few miles you are in the middle of the ocean. The oceans swells get a bit large and at a few points we couldn’t see the island hotels. The crew are professionals and do this for a living this is very normal to them. Please treat them with the respect they deserve. You are on their boat, using their gear. It doesn’t matter if you have 100$ in fishing equipment or 30,000$. At the end of the day you can’t make the fish bite. Was well worth the trip for us and we didn’t bring a fish home.

Bring sunblock! We did not and we definitely felt it the next day. Take pictures! It’s an experience you’ll want to look back on. And be patient! It’s still fishing. You never know when the big one is going to hit.

This was our first time fishing hawaii we had deep sea fished in tofino BC and Cancun this ocean is easily rougher make sure to take something for sea sickness before going. Would still do it again though

This was our first time fishing in Hawaii, so not sure seasonally how fishing changes. Our trip started out pretty slow but glad we booked the full day. All our fish came in the afternoon. Caught multiple Mahi-mahi.

Remember it is called 'fishing' and not 'catching'. No one can control the weather, or make the fish bite. I have fished for over 50 years, so perhaps I have a bit more realistic approach, and expectations. You won't catch fish everytime you go out. When you can, and if you have the time and money, book a full day trip. It increases your chances of having a great day. Half-day charters are hard as it limits the time you have, and you may not catch the tides right.

Follow the crews instructions to keep your bait close to the bottom while not getting snagged and pretty soon you should be catching and not just fishing. Everyone in our party of 3 caught fish and only one was an experienced fisher.

Know any fishing anywhere is subjected to luck. You need to plan on having a good time and be pleasantly surprised if you get a catch. You never know if you get one or not anywhere so take that into consideration.

Reeling in a marlin is a “bucket list” experience. If you’re looking to take home fish you should look for a boat that is targeting smaller fish. If you want to take your chances to catch the fish of a lifetime and look for Marlin then I highly recommend five star fishing.

Do it! It’s fishing. Not catching! But if you’re somewhat of a fisherman or outdoors person, you’d understand. Sometimes the fish has the better of you and sometimes you have the better of them. The important thing is to pay attention to the crew to see how they are changing up rigs and tactics to put you on fish!

Make sure the captain and crew are knowledgeable about what you are catching. There are a lot of endangered species or illegal to catch fish in hawaii so if not could get in some big trouble real fast

This is definitely a first time, small catch, family fun type of outing. Boat was great for a party of 4, unsure how it would be for more people. Please note, taking seasick meds with you is probably a good idea, even if you think you won't need them.

Yes, some of our shipmates had little experience with big water fishing. They made sure to coach them as they got the fish in

Bring sunscreen, Take Dramamine be patient. Ask question to your captain/ be serious about catching fish. Be polite.

This is not for the experienced fisherman this is for rookie fishermen first time fisherman definitely not for the experience fisherman

Yes, this is a great trip for beginners or seasoned fisherman. Really great experience overall.

If you are coming here to catch fish, August thru October tend to be more productive.

This is a great easy fishing trip to just catch something and have a lot of fun.

Pack a lunch, sunblock, and lots of water. If you have motion sickness get some scopalmine

Of course when windy it can be rough. No guarantees to catch fish so you just have to get out there and put in your time and it will pay off.

Be aware that the ocean can be rough. It’s not in their hands. so please don’t complain if you get sea sick.

A three hour trip isn’t enough time to get to where the fish are and actually catch some of them. It’s a good trip for inexperienced anglers and tourists.

Motion sickness medication - ocean is unpredictable. Have more cash on hand to tip the captain and crew better for such a great time.

I booked a different trip and it was not exactly what I hoped... this was a true fishing boat with crew to match. Would absolutely go out with them again.

Get a good guide - fish are pretty different in this area from other coastal areas in the mainland US.

Get ready for some sore arms these are some big boys. Exciting ride with some big fights and even bigger fish.

Make sure to bring nausea pills incase you're not sure if u get sea sick. Wear sunscreen and bring a hat and plenty of drinks. Make sure you tip. The crew works hard! Support the island!!!
