Cooler Weather
Cooler Weather "Means Hot Fishing"
Nov. 1, 2017 Indialantic
Captain Chris Beckett of Central Florida Sport Fishing Charters in Indian Harbour Beach, Fl has fished and guided in the back bays, lagoons and river mouths up and down Florida's Coasts for more than 35 years. He consistently catches more inshore species than most other anglers do because he knows the secrets of successful back-bay fishing. He knows the seasonal fishing patterns of all the saltwater fishes, and more importantly, he understands which species will show-up when, where and why. This week, Captain Chris tells us what’s biting in the cooler weather months near the Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach areas. Sheepshead and Mangrove Snapper with a mix of Speckeled trout and Redfish is whats biting in the cooler fall and winter months. We always can catch fish on Florida's Coast, because they’re always biting somewhere. You just have to know where and when. Right now in mid-fall, the IRL and BRL is receiving plenty of muddy water from the creeks and rivers, because the area has had a lot of rain. However, the Sheepshead are really showing-up on the docks, bridges and rocks in the lagoons. We’re catching sheepshead that will weigh 2-8 pounds on live and dead shrimp. The speckled trout and the redfish are starting to show in the mouths of the rivers, and the most-consistent place to catch them right now is in the warmer shallow water. Many coastal anglers used to consider a sheepshead a trash fish, but I know that you fish for them throughout the year. Question: Why? Answer: I've been eating sheepshead all my life. Sheepshead is one of the tastiest fish that swims in saltwater. When you fillet a sheepshead, you get a really pretty piece of white meat that runs from the base of the fish's head, down its back and toward the fish's tail. Because a sheepshead has a large stomach area, you won't get as much meat from a sheepshead as you will from a redfish or a speckled trout, but the meat you do get will be delicious. Some anglers in our area who commercial fish for speckled trout also take sheepshead all year long. Too, the sheepshead is a great fighting fish, and you generally can locate sheepshead around any type of area with barnacles. Since sheepshead tend to feed on barnacles, rocks, bridges and docks will all hold sheepshead. Question: What technique do you use to catch the sheepshead? Answer: I usually use a piece of dead shrimp and a small hook. If the current's not running hard, I won't use any shot lead. However, if the current is running hard, I may have to use a piece of shot lead up the line. I'll cast upcurrent and let the current wash the bait down to the fish. I'll also use Mustad Braid line, usually in 30-pound test, in the winter when I fish in dirtier water. In the spring, when the water is often clear I may move to 10-pound test Monofiliment line. The line you use is a critical factor in whether or not you land sheepshead. Fishing around rocks, bridges, piers and docks, that line will come in contact with barnacles. If it doesn't have a high-abrasion-resistance factor, you'll lose more sheepshead than you catch. So book your trip today, lets go catch a memory and some really good eats!
