I've been obsessed with Fishing Jacksonville's St. Johns River and its backwater tributaries since I started fishing my home waters with my dad at around 8 years old. It's been a life-long study and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with those that share my passion for fishing. I know a variety of techniques and can probably accommodate your preferred style of fishing if you give me a heads up on your preferences beforehand.

I'm particularly skilled at catching inshore fish with Light Tackle and Artificial Lures. I enjoy working with kids that have an interest in fishing. One of my most productive charters is a short 4-hour trip starting just before sundown and fishing on into the dark.

Chasing the Tide Proves to be Successful
Chasing the Tide Proves to be Successful

I love to see family enjoying time together on the water. Stefan and Jordy do so on a regular basis. This past Saturday they celebrated a Jordy's 18th birthday with a day of fishing aboard Blue Cyclone. We usually launch from Sister's Creek but the tide was a little later than I preferred. Instead we launched at Palms Fish Camp in Clapboard Creek where the tide comes in 1 hour later. We wanted to catch the 1st of the incoming tide at sunrise when the redfish would be most active. We saw a big school of redfish raise up in the main creek on the way to our destination. We crossed some super skinny flats and set the boat down in a small bowl of water where I suspected a school of redfish would be lingering. I explained to the Fourie's that we would be trapped here for a bit but it was a good place to be trapped. We had several good strikes from redfish on the 1st stop but we didn't get one to the boat. The tide came up a foot and we crossed a shallow bar entering another extremely shallow backwater creek system. We quietly accessed the creek with our electric trolling motor. Here we got on a hot bite. We caught our limit of redfish and then some. In addition Jordy landed an over-slot redfish with No-Spots on it which is an Awesome not to mention very Rare-Catch. We then decided to pursue Spotted Seatrout. Jordy managed a nice flounder while we were trout fishing using a live shrimp under a cork and we caught several seatrout casting artificial lures. We left this spot with a North Florida Slam (Redfish, Spotted Seatrout and Flounder) and we ventured to the Mill Cove Flats where we finished the day releasing an additional slot redfish. FAST ACTION FOR THE NEXT 3 MONTHS!
FAST ACTION FOR THE NEXT 3 MONTHS!

We are only 6 days into August and I am really excited about what I am seeing. There seems to be a lot more fish in the St. Johns River and boy are they feeding. Last night my 13 old daughter Kyra and I participated in a short 3-hour tournament. THE BITE WAS OUTSTANDING! On one shoreline with artificial plugs we caught a bull redfish, multiple spotted seatrout, bluefish, ladyfish, mangrove snapper and jack crevalle. We even had a bluefish and jack crevalle on a plug at the same time. The day before I spent scouting by myself for a short 3-hour trip and I hooked up with a large tarpon on a soft plastic lure. I don’t like to guess at tarpon weights but believe it or not I would have preferred a fish half this size for a solo battle such as this. She jumped twice parallel to the water her head facing away from me. The fish came unhooked and surprisingly my leader wasn’t even frayed. I had an audience on shore inquiring about my lure. I told them it was “top secret”. In-fact it was the same lure that Roger Beale and I jumped 9 tarpon in one day on this time of year last year. Only those that book a charter will get to learn our spectacular secret and I promise they will be impressed. It looks like the great tarpon bite we experienced last September is going to begin early this year. In-fact I would recommend booking your September and October trips now. Fishing is going to remain outstanding until the first cold front hits around the 20th of October if history repeats. Shrimp are running in the St. Johns River which is one reason why the fish are so fired up. The fall mullet run is about to kick off. Our Fall flounder run is also about to happen and so-far this has been an exceptional year for flounder. The bull redfish are also about to spawn which makes for fast action in the St. Johns River. Don’t overlook the option of fishing late afternoon or even at night. If we can cheat the afternoon thunder- storms I promise the fishing will be phenomenal. In addition to spotted seatrout, redfish, flounder and tarpon we are going to be getting some bonus snook, black bass, mangrove snapper and black drum. I caught my personal best Jacksonville snook last month. The fish was just shy of 15 lbs. and I am certain I had a customer lose this same fish a week later in the exact same spot. Yes, we will meet that fish again! That’s the beauty of catch and release. I just ordered over $1,000 worth of Bomber, Heddon, Rebel, Smithwick, YUM and Cotton Cordel lures. If you are like me and you get excited about catching fish on light tackle with artificial lures then you are reading the right report. If you prefer live bait we have expertise in that as well. We generally mix it up with both bait fishing and artificial lure’s but I am certain I can customize a light tackle trip to meet your expectations.
