Hochseeangeln in Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are a dream offshore fishing location. Not far from the shore, you can sample some of the finest deep sea fighters. Yellowfin, Bluefin, Blackfin Tuna, Marlin, Mahi, and Wahoo are within a full day trip’s reach. The warm currents of the Gulf Stream flow near, which means OBX offshore fishing stays hot even during the winter.

Why are the Outer Banks great for offshore fishermen?

The Outer Banks boast a favorable fishing terrain. They are close to the continental shelf. Approximately 30 miles east of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet, the water depth changes rapidly. It drops all the way from 600 feet to 6000 feet without a notice. You know how fish like moving around physical structures? They like depth changing even more. Here, game fish can find loads of bait fish. This means an easy meal for Tuna swimming by. Meanwhile, the warm currents bring nutrients, and it all adds up to one big offshore playground. To make most of it, you will need to hire a skillful charter to take you out close to the action. There, you’ll need all your grip to get them to bite.

How to get them when you get there?

Offshore fisheries around the Outer Banks are rewarding, but may not always suit novice fishermen. If you are adventurous and want to head out, great! Getting to the fishing grounds is only one part of the equation, though. You will need to know how to get the gear right, but luckily many of the local captains are crazy about offshore fishing. They have the skills and will work hard to put you on fish. If you’re fishing during the summer months, trolling for Mahi, Wahoo, and of course Blue and White Marlin is a great way to spend the day. When Tunas arrive in winter, head out and either start trolling or employ chunking. By the way, Tunas love Menhaden.

Plan accordingly. Take motion sickness precautions. Talk to the captain for anything needed during trip.

Contact the Captain you are booked with and get as much info as you can from him. Capt. Vinny knew what was coming with a late weather forecast change, and let us know the night before our trip what we were to expect. So we made a change of plans and set out on schedule to a different destination. May weather in North Carolina is somewhat unpredictable and changes fast. So keep in touch up to departure and they will put you on the fish!

Start with a shorter trip with an experienced captain (such as Captain Randy). These guys know the sound so well, you’re almost guaranteed to have a great time.

I would recommend waiting a little later in the year for the water temps to warm up a bit.

If a storm comes in and changes everything might want to reschedule because the water is too rough.

the bite was good for Mahi and Tuna. We had a blast and will be back in June. Captain Tom and Hunter were awesome and the best people we have ever fished with. Hard working and fun to be with.

We took two vehicles. Google Maps got one vehicle there fine. Apple Maps was a disaster and sent my daughter miles out of the way. Put the campground across the street in your gps if you are unsure you are going to the right place.

We have fished the surf and sound in the early season for years, but we would end up buying our fish at the seafood market. With the "Poacher" we went out 5 to 7 miles in the ocean and caught 25 sea bass. The 40 foot boat made us comfortable taking on large waves until we reached the fishing area. The captain and the first mate made fishing enjoyable for all. We are looking forward till we vacation again and book the Poacher for another fun time.

The fish species change throughout the seasons, if you're targeting specific fish plan for the right time. April is awesome for plenty of regional inshore fish and no crowds, but next time we'll target mahi mahi, tuna and marlin in june-aug

It's all about timing. Unfortunately while we were here the drum weren't coming in quite yet and the fishing was slow.

Lance told us that April is a pretty "dry" fishing month, but we just wanted to get out and relax on the water. Mission accomplished.

If your visiting from out of state or not familiar with fishing in the area, give Captain David Luke Lance a call. Great with kids and extremely knowledgeable about fishing in the area.
