Hochseeangeln in Hatteras

Hatteras offshore fishing is, without a doubt, some of the most rewarding angling you can find in this country. From awesome sportfishing for Marlin and Sailfish to incredible food fishing for schooling Mahi Mahi a hundred strong, there is something here for everyone. What Hatteras offshore charters specialize in is giving you the best of both worlds. Many of the local specialty species are that magic mix of hard-fighters and great table fare. Bluefin Tuna rules this category, but Bigeye, Yellowfin, Wahoo, and monster King Mackerel all show up in huge numbers offshore, and will help you work up an appetite to match.

What can I expect from an offshore trip?

Your experience will change hugely depending on what you are going after. Each fish presents a new challenge, and when they are around will also affect your experience of targeting them. You will have a blast no matter what you go after, and will almost always head home with a ton of great fish. The difficult part is choosing what to target, so with that in mind here’s a rundown of your options to (maybe) make the decision easier.

King Mackerel

Big Kingfish can be caught throughout much of the year in Hatteras but it is in the fall months of October and November that they really hit their best. Late-season “Smoker Kings” are a big deal in these parts and for many local anglers this is one of the underrated events of the Outer Banks fishing calendar. Expect huge, ravenous packs of fish as big as 50 pounds, and very little trouble reaching your daily limit of 3 fish per angler.

Mahi Mahi

The largest Mahi Mahi are found pretty far offshore, but throughout the early summer you can find huge schools of “chicken dolphin” within easy reach. They may only weigh around 5 pounds but that doesn’t stop them tasting great! Besides, during the main schooling months of June and July you will hit your limit of 10 fish per person with plenty of time to go after something a bit bigger if you want to.

Tuna

Tuna really are nature’s gift to the Outer Banks. Monster Bluefin scream through the depths in 5,000 feet of water, way out at the far reaches of the gulf stream. For those daunted by the idea of four-hour-long battles and overnight stays on the high winter seas, there are plenty of smaller Tuna found much, much closer to shore. Bigeye, Yellowfin, Blackfin, Skipjack, and Albacore all tag each other out over the course of the year, so there is never a time when Tuna is not on the menu. Even the biggest of these have a 3-fish catch limit per angler, as if things weren’t good enough already!

How long will I need?

Hatteras charter captains must just love being out on the water. Many describe a half day as 5 hours, and 10 hour trips are often considered a bit short for real blue water action. Some captains even say that anything this side of the gulf stream is “nearshore”. Whatever they call it, your best option is an eight-hour trip. This will give you plenty of time to catch your limit and get in some fun sportfishing for other local game fish like Barracuda and Sharks.

If you are pushed for time, though, you can always book a half day. This will give you enough time to catch some great King Mackerel or smaller Tuna, although you will miss out on the chance of decent-sized Bigeye or Yellowfin.

How much will it cost?

A half day trip aboard a local center console or small sportfishing boat can cost as little as $500. The biggest boats kick that price up to around $800, but you can get more people onboard so that’s only fair. Eight-hour trips start at just over $1000, and top out at around $1500 for a full-sized cruiser. These boats come with the works: tournament-winning crews, the very best tackle and bait, and usually food, drinks, and licenses for everyone onboard.

the bite was good for Mahi and Tuna. We had a blast and will be back in June. Captain Tom and Hunter were awesome and the best people we have ever fished with. Hard working and fun to be with.

The fish species change throughout the seasons, if you're targeting specific fish plan for the right time. April is awesome for plenty of regional inshore fish and no crowds, but next time we'll target mahi mahi, tuna and marlin in june-aug

If you’re hoping for rock fish (or whatever fish) make sure you can catch them. Turns out we missed fishing for rock fish by a day. Disappointing but still had a great time! Yes! We released the rock fish.

I'd recommend booking with an experienced captain as the conditions are constantly changing in the area. Getting some first hand knowledge will help us greatly on future outings.

Plan your trip accordingly. Hatteras seems like it is a long way from Nags Head. There are plenty of good restaurants once you arrive. Tight lines.

Allow yourself a couple of possible days to go fishing. Wind and weather can be unpredictable year-round and it's nice to have another day to go if you get blown out.

Limit your expectation to the time of year and what fish are biting. Do a little research and as long as you know what to expect and you get a good crew (check out the reviews) you should have a great experience.
