Hochseeangeln in Jacksonville

Also called the "Bold New City of the South" and "Where Florida Begins," Jacksonville is known for its diverse and rich waters among the lovers of the sea. It's possible to catch a variety of game species every step of the way after leaving the dock, but if you're after the biggest of big, the offshore fishing Jacksonville has on its doorstep is your answer.

Jacksonville offshore fishing charters can take you to reefs and wrecks where you'll target the most delicious bottom fish, or you can venture farther out into the blue and target Billfish and other prestigious species.

What type of trip is right for me?

Even though you can catch various species on 4–6 hour trips, landing all those incredible reef and pelagic species will require booking at least a full day trip.

Full Day Trips

Eight hour trips will usually see you fishing 20–50 miles from shore. You could be bottom fishing the wrecks, reefs, and live bottom for Snapper and Grouper around 35 miles offshore. If you venture up to 50 miles out, you can expect to be slow trolling with live bait for huge Amberjack, Cobia, Kingfish, Wahoo, and even Sailfish and other Billfish if you're lucky.

Extended Full Day (Bluewater) Trips

These trips usually last 10–12 hours and will take you out to the ledge 50–70 miles offshore. You'll be bottom fishing or trolling for Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Triggerfish, Bonito, and even Blue Marlin and other Billfish. The distance traveled offshore is weather dependent, and it will usually take you 1.5–2 hours to reach the best deep sea fisheries. This might sound like a lot, but it will definitely pay off!

Overnight Trips

Jacksonville offshore fishing can satisfy even the biggest sportfishing snobs. Overnight trips are perfect for die-hard anglers looking to land their next trophy. You'll be trolling for pelagics during the day, while nighttime is reserved for anchoring and fishing for delicious Snapper and Grouper.

How to Prepare

If you're booking with a licensed charter boat, no need to worry about getting fishing licenses. They're covered by the charter, as well as all the needed fishing gear. Some charters provide food and drinks, but be sure to check before the trip. You should pack sun protection, layered clothing, and seasickness meds in case the seas get too rough.

Jacksonville fishing charters will take care of everything else and make sure you go home with brag-worthy stories and full coolers.

Wear tons of industrial strenght sunscreen and bring a rashguard! Also, take arm day at the gym seriously. You will need all of the upper body strength you've got to pull some of these giants in!

Make sure you are aware of when the kingfish run. I was in the area because of work but if I had a choice I would have come a few week later to troll for them

Double check on the season and your target fish but like me I was coming here to visit anyway and hooked onto more fish than I could count.

Understand the variety that you are likely to catch given the length of your trip. Kings and Barracuda were fun to catch but are not my favorite fish to eat!

Be mindful of the tides and winds. The tides swing 5+ feet four times a day and that is a WHOLE LOT of water constantly moving

I watched this guy work with other captains who were much younger than him and obviously have learned from him. They have a community that work with one another to help each other catch the best that they can catch. This is the guy to go for.

The type of fishing we did was backwater with a depth from 3ft to 20ft. The fishing in the backwater was better than expected. So, yes I would recommend fishing in Jacksonville.

Make sure you have a helper. When they get to biting, it can be one after another. Always good to be able to keep up.
