If you're an inshore fishing fanatic, why not cast your line in the unofficial inshore fishing capital of the world? Louisiana inshore fishing charters offer year-round adventures for anglers of all skill levels. One of the things that makes the Bayou State so special is that it has the highest acreage of marshes and wetlands on the Gulf Coast. It’s the perfect habitat for Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Flounder, which is the main reason they’re present here in huge numbers.
Catch Limits
Louisiana fishing guides like to boast that they have some of the highest catch limits around. For example, the catch limit for Speckled Trout is five per person in Virginia and up to six in Florida, while in Louisiana one person can keep up to 25. Before you start worrying about conservation, you should know that the reason this limit is so high is that there’s simply more fish and fewer anglers than in Florida.
Where to Go
Most fishing charters are based along the eastern side of the state, where tidal depths are better than anywhere else. Starting in New Orleans, there are several main routes that spread to the south. Some of them will lead you to Hopedale, Delacroix, Venice, or Grand Isle. Opportunities for inshore fishing are similar and you’ll probably fill up your cooler with Specks or Redfish whichever location you choose.
What to Expect
On a typical LA inshore trip, you’ll target Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, Black Drum, Sheepshead, and Largemouth Bass. Your fishing guide will supply you with rods, reels, and lures and you can keep the catch in most cases. Some captains also offer to clean and fillet your catch for free, but this differs from one guide to another, so check in advance. Trips are generally private, so you can count on having the whole boat for your group only. In most cases, you only need to bring your snacks and drinks.
Need to Know
- Anglers age 16 or older must have a valid fishing license. If you’re fishing south of the “saltwater line,” you also need a Louisiana saltwater angler’s license (anything south of the Intracoastal Waterway is a saltwater fishing area).
Fishing in waters that are very likely to reward you with a cooler full of fish is what makes Louisiana inshore fishing so attractive and exciting, even for novices. With so many locations and fishing guides to choose from, you'll want to keep coming back!
