Angeln entlang der Küste in Sarasota

Sarasota inshore fishing is what most local charters focus on, and with good reason. Sarasota has year-round populations of several shallow-water favorites including Redfish, Flounder, and Speckled Trout. The area also has some important summer visitors like Tarpon and Snook which make fighting the heat well worth the effort.

What to catch and when to target it

Hit the shallows pretty much any time of year and you will see why Sarasota inshore fishing is such a big deal. Even in the sleepy months of January and February, the waters are alive with three of the most important inshore species in the country.

The local grass flats, sandbars, and mangroves offer an endless playground for inshore anglers. The different environments mean you can never get bored. Redfish, Trout, and Flounder thrive all year round in these waters, and there are plenty charters waiting to take you.

If you fancy something more than the area’s permanent residents, the best time to come is in summer. Snook, Permit, and Tarpon swarm the shallows from May onwards. The Sarasota Tarpon Tournament brings anglers from across the country to fish for these awesome fish, which can mean the price of charters rise. All three species stick around until at least the end of August though, so you can beat the crowds if you can take the sun.

How to fish

The variety of environments in the Sarasota Bay area means that you can basically take your pick of fishing techniques. Spin anglers and fly fishing enthusiasts will fall in love with the area. If sight casting is more your thing, you will plenty of tailing Reds and shimmering Permit to land a well-placed line in front of. For a more heavy-duty challenge, Sarasota Tarpon fishing offers battles in even the skinniest waters. Tarpon weighing in excess of 200 pounds are caught every year here, making this one of the best Tarpon fisheries in the country.

Even when the gulf looks smooth it is rougher than you think. Dramamine, or stay in the bay.

Maybe research the type of fish you want to catch? Ask locals or your Captain? Our Captain asked us and no one in the group knew what we wanted to fish for. Our Captain was happy to help us out. We had a great time!

Get a charter or guide right away. There’s too much water and different ways to do things until you see how they operate first hand.

We really just wanted the fishing/boat experience and weren’t too concerned about catching things. Only my daughter caught a fish but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

Josh is a great guide. Caught alot of fish in many different areas. Ask him to take you to the "honey Hole" dock fishing. Caught a fish on almost every single cast. This is a true review..Mark Gleisner, Oconomowoc, wisconsin.

Captain Scott was great, he put us on the fish. At each stop he took the time to explain what type fish we may catch but also the technique that we should be using. We had a great day, catching snapper, catfish and a tripletail. This trip truly had the fish that got away, a giant tripletail that got away as it neared the boat. We definitely would recommend him and looking forward to future trips.

Water temp is a very warm 90⁰ plus, so certain types of fish are not running and/or biting. Sarasota is still beautiful this time of year, so I would still recommend it.

Be flexible with inshore offshore when the trip comes around. We wanted offshore but when the seas are rough the bays are protected and much calmer

It was pretty windy while we were there. There were some storms in the Gulf that probably threw the captain some curveballs to deal with. It was a good trip, but the captain seemed a little disappointed with the results. We are from the North, so the fishing still was excellent by comparison.

We caught plenty for dinner. I had hoped to catch larger fish. They averaged 8 -12 inches. Great variety. Mostly bottom fishing. Still a lot of fun.
