The area offers game fish galore that will keep you coming back for more throughout the year. The waters are calm with an average depth of 3 feet, and teeming with impressive-sized fish that will be a challenge to reel in, both for seasoned fishermen and beginners. What to catch
Redfish are coveted for their cunning and size, Snook steal the show with their agility and strength, and the Silver King needs no introduction – fishing for Tarpon is superb here. The summer months are the best time to hook these A-listers. Jack Crevalle, Cobia, Snapper, Permit, Pompano, Flounder, and Sharks are also caught frequently, especially in the winter months.
What to expect
A knowledgeable local captain will lead the way to the treasure troves of the flats to test your luck. You will be using an array of techniques to get the biggest fish into the boat including drift fishing, trolling, baitcasting, and fly fishing. Half day trips are in the $450–$550 range, and perfectly suited for beginners and anglers that only have four hours to chase the inshore favorites. Full days are in the $650–$850 ballpark and the right choice for fishermen who would like a bigger variety of catch or a chance to stalk prestigious Tarpon. Whatever your preference, flats fishing in Tampa is not only incredibly productive, but affordable as well.
Your guide will provide the necessary fishing license for you and your group, so just pack snacks, drinks, hats, and sunscreen. The waters of the bay are clear and calm, so you don’t have to worry about seasickness, just focus on premier fishing and having a good time!
