When it comes to fishing, there are many places around the world that offer a variety of different techniques that should be on your bucket list. Key Largo backcountry fishing shoud definitely make the cut. These beautiful waters have high levels of nutrients that attract huge populations of bait fish. This in turn draws in the larger game that you’ll be targeting on your trip.
Trip Types
The backcountry is protected from strong winds and high waves, making these trips great for people new to fishing or who suffer from seasickness.
You’ll spend the day fishing on a small boat such as a skiff or a flats boat. These can usually take around 2–3 anglers. They are versatile and can easily maneuver into hard-to-reach areas.
You can expect to be sight fishing in these shallow waters on a 4–8 hour trip. Most boats will have an elevated platform specifically for this technique.
Backcountry fishing in Key Largo is the trip to go on for anglers who want to catch many different species. The species you’ll be targeting include Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Seatrout, Sharks, Pompano, Jack Crevalle, and Black Drum. The captain will advise you what can be kept and of what size.
How to Prepare
Your fishing license for the day is covered by the boat, so you don’t need to worry about buying one on your own.
Due to the space available on the boat, you won't be able to bring a cooler of food and drinks along. Pack the essentials, a camera, and your lunch in your bag.
The captain will have light tackle on board for you to use. If you're bringing your own, let the captain know in advance so he can make room. Spinning gear and fly fishing rods and reels will be put through their paces in the backcountry.

The character and approach of the captain matters. Captain needs to listen to his customers and not choose what suits him better. I would highly recommend Jason even if we would have no fish on the boat but we did .

We really deferred to Pete’s expertise on where to go and when. He gave us a call on our first scheduled day and said the seas were going to be rough, and suggested that while he’d be happy to take us out, we might want to reschedule. Glad he did that as the day we went was perfect.

Fellow anglers, you really need to be prepared by wearing a hat, good UV blocking sunglasses, suntan lotion, bug spray, boat shoes, and perhaps a light weight long-sleeved fishing shirt with a hood. If you think anyone in your party might be susceptible to motion sickness then make sure you bring Bonine or Dramamine. Happy fishing.

Be patient and help find the fish!! We looked for weed lines, structure, anything that holds fish. Stay alert because when you find them it gets wild pulling Mahi off a giant school of fish! I have fished here several times but this was my first Rodeo. Gotta have baits in the water to catch them. :-). Go get em.

The summer is busy along with winter season - book your fishing trips out by a couple months as you don’t want to not get on that water! And don’t forget about mini open lobster season in July as it will be very busy!

It is super hot in Key Largo in June. If you're fishing it will be deep sea trolling, otherwise you'll pass out from the sun. Go in an earlier month for reef fishing.
