Angeln im Hinterland in Islamorada

There’s a reason that Islamorada is the sportfishing capital of the world. Located across five islands, you’re a stone’s throw from thousands of mangrove islands of the Everglades. These are excellent hunting grounds for delicious and tough-fighting fish. Islamorada backcountry fishing charters will take you to the sweetest shallow fishing grounds.

What to Expect

Picture the scene: you’re gently drifting along the water, surrounded by stunning wildlife – manatees, pelicans, even alligators... You swing your line to the tailing fish, and bang! The rod doubles over, and you’re in for a fight. Battle it out with a prized fish, before reaping the rewards of your hard work.

There’s something for everyone when backcountry fishing in Islamorada. The calm, shallow waters average just 3 feet in depth and are ideal for beginners to get your sea legs.

Take advantage of four-hour trips to test the waters, while the more keen angler can opt for an eight-hour trip to really hone your fishing skills. If you’re torn between the two, then the six-hour option is for you.

You’ll get more bang for your buck in the backcountry than elsewhere in the Keys. The mangroves make for excellent hiding and feeding spots for smaller fish and you know what that means – the predators love it too! Battle it out with a range of fish, from Snappers, Trout, and Redfish, to Tarpon, Permit, and Sharks. Head back to shore with a delicious treat and prized catch to your name.

You’ll most likely navigate these waters aboard a small skiff. These light vessels can handle even the skinniest spots, and your charter captain will steer you using a push pole. Creep up quietly on the spooky fish and sight cast with live bait to attract their bite.

How to Prepare

Make sure to protect yourself from the powerful sun and cover up well. Wear long sleeves and sunscreen, as well as a hat and shades. Most captains will provide water to keep you hydrated, but you should also bring aboard drinks and snacks to stay refreshed.

If you fancy your skills on the fly, check with your captain whether you need to bring your own gear.

These calm, clear waters are ideal for sight casting and fly fishing, and the tough-fighting fish are sure to give you a run for your money. Hop aboard an Islamorada backcountry fishing charter and see for yourself!

Lots of tarpon moving around the mangrove islands in October. A live shrimp, or a DOA shrimp is a great bait for the tarpon.

Plenty of sunscreen and be prepared to hunt for fish on the move. Offshore definitely preferable to bottom fishing this time of year.

Amazing time of the year to go fishing here in the Florida keys, Islamorada. Very quiet on the island as not many tourists are here. Weather is beautiful with little to no wind. Seas have started to cool down and the abundance of bait and fish is outstanding.

The islands are historically good for fishing. Water is beautiful and there are plenty of fish. Many choices of accommodations and restaurants. Very "laid back" beach town vibe. WE will definitely go back!

Come to the Keys at the right time of the year- spring /early summer or fall- winter time, July - August the water gets to 90 degrees and above- not conducive to great fishing. But it’s still beautiful down here no matter the season.

I am not very knowledgeable of fishing seasons, but we liked being able to launch from John Pennecamp State Park and fish in some beautiful areas. Weather was perfect. Clear, sunny skies. Hot, but otherwise a great day fishing.

Be patient, listen to your captain, the fish are big but the ocean is much bigger, not easy to always find fish that are always on the move! What worked yesterday might not work today, so don’t over expect!

Research, google, and try more than one charter. Call the Captain and others. Be ready for rough seas. If you’re prone to seasickness, come prepared. But also be ready to have some fish to freeze.
