Green Bay – the shallower and more fertile offshoot of Lake Michigan – is a favorite hotspot for Walleye to congregate in. The shallow waters of the Bay provide for a buffet of fish for them to gorge themselves on at night, while the coastline has plentiful cover for them to shelter during the day. It’s no wonder that Green Bay Walleye is one of the go-to catches of the northeast!

How to catch Walleye

Walleye spend the daylight hours hiding from the sun in any form of shade they can find – underwater logs, tree roots, man-made structures… you name it. Fishing for them at midday is more challenging as you’ll have to convince them to venture out of the shadows. They normally feed during sunup and sundown, so this is generally the best time of day to fish for them.

Walleye tend to school during the warmer months, so if you find one, you’re likely to find more nearby.  They’ll head out to shallower waters in search of their favorite local prey – Perch. If you can’t find Perch to put on the end of your line, nightcrawlers, minnows, and leeches can give you good results. Night trolling tends to produce epic hook ups in the Bay, but be careful – there’s always the chance you might damage your boat on underwater structures.

What time of year to go

Walleye can be targeted year-round in Green Bay. During the winter months ice fishing for Walleye is a favorite, thanks to the hard fight and good dinner bite they provide. The Bay can freeze solid if the winter is cold enough. When it does, monster Walleye can be landed from ice-holes, a trophy catch for any freshwater angler. In the summer the limestone reefs in the Bay provide a good Perch fishery. And where there’s Perch, Walleye follow closely behind.
