Bordering the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, “The First State” is an angler’s paradise. Often overlooked due to the ease of fishing inshore, Tuna fishing in Delaware is among the best you’ll find on the East Coast. Hop aboard a Delaware Tuna fishing charter for an intense battle to fill the boat with plenty of delicious meat.
Where to Go
It’s no surprise that the best ports for heading offshore are on the Atlantic coast. At the mouth of the Delaware Bay, you’ll find Lewes and Rehoboth Beach as the main ports to take you fishing for Tuna. Further down the coast, you may also come across a few Tuna boats around the mouth of the Indian River.
Your shortest run to target Tuna will come at Massey’s Canyon, about 35 miles southwest from the Indian River inlet. Otherwise, you’ll need 55 miles to reach the “Hot Dog.” These are Yellowfin hotspots, where you can fill the boat with plenty of Yellowfin Tuna. If it’s Bluefin you’re looking for, then an 80-mile trip to the continental shelf is required.
What to Expect
To get this far offshore, you’ll need to spend a good while on board. Despite the peak season being in summer, you can still expect some choppy waters. Make sure you’ve got your sea legs ready, as you’ll be on the water for at least 10 hours.
It’s not just your sea legs you’ll need, either. Fishing for tuna is not for the faint-hearted. You should have some experience with a rod in your hand before hopping aboard a Tuna fishing charter in Delaware. Monster Bluefins usually range between 50–100 pounds, but some have even weighed in at over 300 pounds! You’ll need all your strength to hurl these beasts aboard, so make sure your muscles can handle it.
Yellowfin Tuna range between a lighter 30–80 pounds, but their fight is just as tough. These warm-blooded creatures can dive deep into the cold waters with your line, leaving you with plenty of work to do. You’ll need some knowledge of how to control the line to make sure you don’t lose that all-important catch.
How to Prepare
Your offshore sportfishing boat or sturdy center console will have all you need for a productive day on board. All Delaware fishing charters cover each customer on board with a license, so there’s no need to worry there. All you’ll need to do is bring some drinks and snacks and settle in for the fishing trip of a lifetime. Hop aboard a Delaware Tuna fishing charter and experience the thrill of offshore fishing!
