Most anglers come to the Old Line State for the incredible inshore fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. But you could find yourself in the right spot at the right time for some of the East Coast’s best offshore fishing, too. Maryland Tuna fishing charters will take you to the canyons and holes that attract tough-fighting and delicious Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna.
What to Expect
You’d better be prepared for a workout when fishing the Atlantic for Tuna. These strong beasts will do anything to get off your hook. Unlike other fish, they can drop much deeper thanks to their warm blood, enabling them to almost yank you overboard as they steal your line. Strong and heavy, you’ll battle it out for at least 20 minutes to get a 30–40 lb Tuna on board.
Head up to 100 miles out to find the sweetest offshore fishing grounds. From the Wilmington down to the Washington Canyon, you’ll have a range of deep water spots to hunt Tuna in. The waters get real choppy here, despite the season running through summer. Make sure you’ve got your sea legs ready, as you’ll be on the water for a long time.
You’ll be fishing aboard a spacious offshore sportfishing boat. These modern, powerful vessels come equipped with all the latest navigational equipment to get you to the fishing grounds. Your crew will set up the trolling lines and everything else you need for a productive day on the water, so you’re good to go.
Where to Go
As most of Maryland’s coastline is inshore, your best bet is catching a charter in Ocean City – the state’s closest spot to the Gulf Stream. Even here, you’ll need at least 10 hours on the water to reach the canyons. Spend up to 3 days on the water to get the most out of your trip, filling the boat with plenty of delicious Yellowfins and Bluefins.
How to Prepare
With your MD fishing license covered, there’s very little left for you to do before going fishing for Tuna in Maryland. Your captain will have all the fishing gear and bait for you to use. All you’ll need to do is bring your own drinks and snacks aboard and dress appropriately to protect against the elements. Hop aboard a Maryland Tuna fishing charter and experience some of the best offshore fishing on the East Coast!
