(Caranx ignobilis)
GT fishing in Australia has been gaining major traction in the past years. Monster-sized fish are abundant due to being hunted exclusively for sport and can often be found quite close to shore, hearding schools of baitfish and ramming into them mercilessly.
GTs range throughout the northern half of Australia, starting from Brisbane to the east and extending north into the Torres Strait Islands, with the Great Barrier Reef being a prolific fishery boasting an impressive record of 37 releases during a day trip. A couple of notable hotspots in this stretch of Queensland include Shoalwater Bay, Mackay and the Whitsundays Region. In Western Australia, GTs can often be spotted around jetties, with a couple of better known ones found in Exmouth and Broome.
The most popular styles of fishing for GT are popping and jigging. These require expensive lures and tackle and are best employed in supervision of an experienced guide, as they will know where and how to get you that trophy catch without too many cut lines.
Fish are common in schools around 15kg, but are known to grow well over 40kg. They are available year-round, but the best time to target them is September through March.
