Stör Angeln in Oregon
Stör Angeln in Oregon
(Acipenseridae spp.)
Always wanted to come face-to-gills with a fish that’s so prehistoric, certain varieties are known as “dinosaurs”? Then head to the Beaver State, which offers up ample opportunities to cast your line for huge White Sturgeon! These beasts are large and in charge, and you’ll find plenty of Oregon Sturgeon fishing guides waiting to take you out for a truly epic battle against them.
White Sturgeon proudly wear the title of Oregon’s largest game fish, with some varieties reaching up to 12 feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds. The Columbia River is far and away the state’s most famous Sturgeon fishing location, with millions of fish inhabiting its waters, but there are plenty of other rivers and bays on offer, too. No matter where you fish, trips run anywhere from a few hours out on the water to full day excursions.
Although Sturgeon can be targeted in Oregon year-round, when picking a departure point it’s important to consider when your trip will be taking place. Portland’s stretch of the Columbia River boasts “dinosaur” Sturgeon in March and April. The Willamette River is the perfect place to cast a line between fall and early spring. Bays such as the Tillamook, Nehalem, Coos, Yaquina, and Siuslaw are especially productive during the winter months.
Sturgeon are mainly catch and release in Oregon, with an open “trophy season” along the Columbia River that changes annually. Because of this, if you’re looking to hook a keeper Sturgeon, it’s best to fish alongside a local guide who knows the latest regulations.
