Stör Angeln in Michigan
(Acipenseridae spp.)
There are few states in the country with such a range of fishing on offer as Michigan. Bordering three Great Lakes, home to over 11,000 inland lakes, and plenty of streams, it’s a haven for anglers from all over the world. One of the state’s main attractions is Sturgeon. This ancient, enormous beast is a prize for any angler worth their salt. Come Sturgeon fishing in Michigan and battle it out like a pro!
Where to Go
With such a range of fishing grounds on offer in Michigan, it can be difficult to settle on a destination. Fortunately, the Michigan DNR has taken steps in the last few years to boost the Sturgeon population, and has reintroduced it to many of the state’s productive waterways.
Hit up Lake Huron for some surefire Sturgeon action, with plenty of charters congregating around Saginaw Bay. Lake St. Clair and its tributaries are also a popular spot for hooking these beasts, with downtown Detroit even offering the chance to get out on the water. Come aboard here or down on Lake Erie and experience the thrill of Sturgeon fishing in Michigan.
What to Expect
It requires a lot of patience to attract the bite of a Sturgeon. These monsters are still few and far between in some of the open waters of Michigan. But when you hook one, you’d better be ready for a fight like never before. Your average catch will be anywhere from 40–80 pounds, but some of the monsters can reach over 150!
Not only that, but these prehistoric creatures promise a battle like you’ve never seen. With long runs and even stunning leaps out of the water, you’ll be made to put in a real shift to keep them on the end of your line.
Most captains offer species-specific trips to target Sturgeon, so you’ll have everything you need for a particularly productive day out. Trips last anywhere from four hours to eight hours, so anglers of all ages and abilities can come aboard and test their skills.
Good to Know
In order to help conserve these famous fish, the fishing season is heavily regulated. Each angler is only allowed to keep one Sturgeon per year, so you’ll most likely be practicing catch and release to help keep up their numbers.
These beauties usually surface around the end of summer, reaching their peak in fall, before proving more difficult to catch in winter. Come from August through November for your best chance of landing that prized catch.
