Salmon fishing in Michigan is one of the best and most exciting ways to experience all the riches that the “Great Lakes State” has to offer. Michigan is cradled between four out of five Great Lakes – Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Erie, and Lake Huron – and all of them boast excellent Salmon action.
The top species you’ll target in Michigan are Chinook (King), Coho, and Atlantic Salmon – aka Kokanee. Fishing for Kings is by far the most popular, and there are some impressive specimens swimming in these waters. The Coho bite is just as productive, while Kokanee aren’t as numerous, but there’s still plenty of them to chase.
The peak Salmon season changes slightly from one lake to another but, in general, April–October is the best time to book your fishing trip. You can check out pre-spawn Salmon runs in some rivers in early fall, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised both by the number and size of fish.
Because Salmon fishing in Michigan is so good, you’ll have no problem finding a local guide to put you on the bite. You’ll have the best results on full day trips when you’ll have plenty of time to catch something good that can also fill your cooler. Shorter excursions can be productive too, but you’ll have less time to cover different hotspots, so bear that in mind when organizing your vacation.
Where can you go to land a nice Salmon? Well, all of the Great Lakes are a great place to start. If you’d like to try river fishing, then the Manistee, Pere Marquette, and Muskegon Rivers boast fantastic fall Salmon runs. Basically, the whole of Michigan is your fishing playground!

Late August, after most kids go back to school, the mass tourism dies down and the place isn’t crowded. There are tons of King salmon in the bay, but they can be hit or miss on the bite as they get wise to fishing pressure and/or shift to spawn mode (the only reason the rating isn’t 5 stars)

Expect to catch fish but also expect lulls in between. In August the fish are still moving in close to shore one minute and heading for deeper water the next. In the morning the fish were in close to shore. When the sun came up they headed for deep water. You can also expect to catch a variety of fish. There’s coho, chinook and Lake Trout.

Listen to your crew. We’re from St Louis. Fishing in the Great Lakes was very different than fishing in other Mid-West lakes. We lost a couple of nice sized salmon because we used other hook & reel techniques that simply don’t work when fishing in Lake Michigan. Following the crews advice we managed to catch plenty of nice size salmon, including the sixteen pounder my son caught.
