When you want to experience Oregon’s freshwater fishing to the fullest, go Salmon fishing in the Rogue River! Chinook Salmon are arguably the symbol of the river’s fishing scene but it’s not the only type of Salmon you can catch – Coho are here too! Even though you can go fishing in the Rogue River year round, you’ll find most fishing guides active during Salmon runs, which only proves how important they are for local anglers.
Spring-run Chinook, also known as Springers, are the main prize of the year. Their season lasts from late March–June, when they usually weigh 10–35 pounds. They have a reputation for being aggressive and catching them is surely a fun challenge. It’s best to go after them early in the morning to get a head start.
The fall run starts in September when Chinook Salmon gather in the lower part of the Rogue River. These are bigger than Springers but don’t fight as hard. The best way to catch them is by drift fishing, so it’s also a great opportunity to enjoy your surroundings. In October, Coho Salmon also join the game and make a great option for a combo trip.
Combo adventures work best if you take a full day trip, especially if you want to add Steelhead into the mix. Short trips are great if you’re fishing with your family or simply want to learn the basics. When looking for a departure point, you’ll find great guides from Gold Beach to Grants Pass, which is where most of the fishing action happens.
