When looking for something tasty and exciting to catch, Perch fishing charters in Michigan are one of the best options. Year-round fishing, consistent action, delicious catch. It can sometimes seem that freshwater fishing in Michigan is as good as they say simply because of Perch!
When to go Perch fishing in Michigan
The most frequently caught game fish in Michigan spawn in spring. Perch move into the shallower water which can sometimes be only a few feet deep. During this time of the year, you can fill the ice-chest when fishing the rivers, canals, and cuts off in the Great Lakes.
In the summer months and autumn, Perch usually reside both in and around weed beds in shallower lakes and waters up to 30 feet.
Unlike the majority of Great Lakes fish species, Perch are active even during the winter months. They stay under the ice in both deep and shallower water.
Throughout the year, jumbos can be found anywhere in Lake Michigan’s ports, southern Michigan, Saginaw Bay, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the Les Cheneaux Islands area of northern Lake Huron.
How to catch Perch in Michigan
Perch typically bite all day long, but not at night - they rest on the bottom. They are delicate biters and tend to swim in schools. Once you’ve located a hungry school, you can shout ‘Fish On!’ and begin the action. Drift with the wind for the hungry and aggressive Perch, drop anchor, and cast.
The best way to target Perch is with all manner of live bait from leeches, wax worms, and minnows to earthworms and small crayfish. When choosing a lure, artificials can also be in favor - you just need to pick the right type.
If you are going Perch fishing when the waters are frozen, the preferred baits are plain hooks tipped with minnows and small tear drops with spikes, wax worms, and mousies.

Late in the season for trout and salmon but the Cisco was fun to catch. Good mild fish, cleaning was a little tricky with all the small bones. Lots of small lakes but not a ton of public access or good shore fishing.

Late August, after most kids go back to school, the mass tourism dies down and the place isn’t crowded. There are tons of King salmon in the bay, but they can be hit or miss on the bite as they get wise to fishing pressure and/or shift to spawn mode (the only reason the rating isn’t 5 stars)

Expect to catch fish but also expect lulls in between. In August the fish are still moving in close to shore one minute and heading for deeper water the next. In the morning the fish were in close to shore. When the sun came up they headed for deep water. You can also expect to catch a variety of fish. There’s coho, chinook and Lake Trout.
