Marlin fishing in Florida needs no introduction. These waters are nothing short of legendary. Chasing Marlin in the Gulf Stream is one of the most thrilling and challenging fishing experiences you can find. These fish are incredibly powerful fighters, and when you combine that with the sheer size of them, you get a fishing trip to remember.
Florida offers two distinct Marlin species: Blue Marlin and White Marlin. While the first one already impresses with its size, White Marlin will leave you speechless with their fierce fighting as they jump out of the water to escape your hook. They grow up to around 9 feet in length, which makes them a formidable foe for a new big game angler.
If you’re looking to go after Blue Marlin, you should be ready for a serious workout. An average specimen can reach a weight of up to 400 pounds and will hit your line like a truck. They’ll fight hard, jumping and shaking their heads, but if you can keep up with them, they may tire out sooner rather than later.
The major fishing technique to catch Marlin is trolling. Several lures are dragged behind your boat to imitate a school of baitfish. This attracts the attention of the Marlin which will then strike at one of the lures, and the fight begins. Depending on where you’re fishing, live bait is often preferred.
Marlin can be found in both the Gulf as well as the Atlantic, which means you can fish for them from any coastal harbour in Florida. However, in some places that means you’ll have to take a longer trip out to sea. Two towns that are among the closest to the Marlin fishing grounds are Destin and Key West. Palm Beach also makes for an excellent Marlin fishing trip in Florida.
