Everyone can have a go at catching Marlin in Los Cabos. This sunny municipality on the tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula first became known for its fishing more than half a century ago, when anglers started to arrive from overseas to explore the rich waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. Now, it’s one of the most well known big game fishing venues in the world, and with good reason. Home to the world-famous Cabo San Lucas, it’s easier to catch a Marlin here than anywhere else on the planet!
Where and how to catch Marlin in Los Cabos
The best place to go Marlin fishing in Los Cabos (and Mexico, and most of the world) is Cabo San Lucas. Many prominent sportfishers made their name here, with an impressive number of record-breaking catches coming out of this part of the Gulf of California. Thousands of people have hooked up on Marlins here. Still not convinced? Come see for yourself.
Both Blue and Striped Marlin are regular catches in Cabo, although it’s possible to find a Black Marlin on the other end of your line, too. These prestigious trophies don’t give in without a fight!
Like in other parts of the world, captains in Los Cabos target Marlin by trolling. Watch while your crew rigs your hook with live bait or trolling lures and sets out a spread to imitate this Billfish’s favorite prey. All the equipment will usually be included in the price of your trip, but make sure to check with your captain to see if you’ll need to bring anything with you other than enthusiasm!
Once a Marlin bites the bait and the crew hands you the fishing rod, get ready. These fish are surprisingly agile for their size, leaping out of the water and diving back under as they attempt to shake the hook. This will test both the strength of your line and your own endurance! Marlins can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour and can reach sizes of several hundred pounds, so there’s a real chance that the fish will be victorious in this fight. Are you ready for the challenge?
When to go
You can catch Marlin all year round in Los Cabos, but Blue and Black Marlin peak from June through December. If you’re planning your vacation at another time of year, don’t worry: Striped Marlin fishing can be excellent in late winter and early spring.
Even if you’re still new to sportfishing, don’t miss your chance to catch the most prestigious trophy in this “Marlin capital of the world.” The sheer quantity of Billfish and the expertise of the local charter crews make this the go-to destination for this bucket list fish!
