Hummer Angeln in Kalifornien
Hummer Angeln in Kalifornien
(Nephropidae)
The Lobster fishing California has in store is perfect for anglers looking for a fun way to spend their time on the water. From October through mid-March, the area’s piers, jetties, reefs, and wrecks become the center of attention for fishermen looking to catch some “big bugs.”
Where to Go
Come October, the water temperature in southern California reaches 65 degrees, and the Spiny Lobster fishing season is finally open. These guys are different from their East Coast cousins because they have no claws and are generally smaller. This doesn’t mean they’re any less delicious, though. They’re also more difficult to catch because they do a great job of staying hidden in the rock piles and underwater structures.
When going after these odd-looking critters, your best option is to hit the spots with rocky bottom close to the coast. Many anglers catch them from the coast or local piers using hoop nets, and it’s a lot of fun for all levels and ages. The long stretch of water between San Diego and Santa Barbara is the most productive patch for Lobster fishing in the state.
Spiny Lobster also cling to the rocky shoreline around the Santa Catalina and San Clemente Islands and local anglers know that this is a treasure trove in the area. Scuba divers also love to go hunting for these “bugs,” and if this is your preferred method, then you should catch your prey with your hands (in diving gloves), without using any additional tools.
How to Catch Lobster
Because Spiny Lobster are slippery buggers, you need something alluring to get them into your net. The best way to get their attention is to use smelly bait that can include anything from cut Bonito, Squid, and Mackerel to anchovies and sardines. Some anglers also swear by using cat food.
Spiny Lobster are night feeders, so your best chance of getting your limit is booking a night fishing trip that will take you to the most productive spots. Some argue that hitting the water right before dusk is a good way to ensure some catches.
Many local charters offer Lobster hooping trips that are in the $375–$1,350 price range, depending on the amount of time you want to spend on the water.
What to Expect
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has very strict rules you need to abide by when going Lobster fishing. The season is open from October until March and only then you can target them. You’ll need a valid fishing license with an Ocean Enhancement Validation, as well as a Spiny Lobster Report Card where you write down your daily catches.
You’re allowed to keep up to seven Lobster per person, but only if they’re at least three-and-a-quarter inches long from their horn to the lower edge of their shell. As long as you follow these regulations, the Lobster fishing California is known for is yours to discover!
