This vast body of water is the playground of hundreds of fish species and thousands of anglers, yet somehow, Mississippi River Bass fishing is something of a local secret. If you’re looking for an underfished Bass territory, this is the place to be!
What to Expect
It’s no secret that Bass love clear and cool waters, which is why many overlook the Mississippi River. It can get quite murky, especially as it flows south. That’s why passionate Bass hunters will have the best time looking for their favorite prey in the middle and upper section of the Mississippi River.
You’ll find a solid bite of Largemouth, Smallmouth, and White Bass anywhere north of St. Louis, IL, and the further north you go, the better the action gets. The Iowa section of the river offers some sizeable Largemouth Bass that can weigh around five pounds. Coon Rapids Dam in Minnesota is another popular honey hole in the warmer months.
Because the quality and clarity of the water are very important to Bass, they’re usually available on the Middle and Upper Mississippi all year, but spring and fall are most productive. The best spots to cast your line include around the areas with rocky bottom, oxbows, and current breaks. Anything from small worms to spinnerbaits will get the Bass’ attention in the spring, while crankbaits and larger worms are the recipe for success in the fall.
What to Bring
Bass fishing is always fun, both because you can catch a fair few of these beauties in one go and because they give a memorable fight. The best way to find some Bass is to hire a fishing guide who knows exactly where they hide.
If you book a charter trip, you’ll have all the tackle provided, not to mention the luxury to relax and just focus on reeling in your catch. You’ll still need a fishing license (talk to your guide before the trip), appropriate clothing for the time of the year and location, and of course, good company.
After that, all you need to do is let Mississippi River Bass fishing blow your mind!
