Angeln in Oregon

With lakes, rivers, and an extensive coastline to explore, casting a line in the “Beaver State” is all about variety! Hop aboard one of the many Oregon fishing charters on offer and you’ll have the chance to experience it all for yourself.

The species you’ll target depend on where you fish, but no matter where you go, you’ll find world-famous fish. The Oregon Coast boasts Chinook and Coho Salmon, Lingcod, Rockfish, Halibut, Crabs, Clams, and even Sturgeon in the bays during cooler months. In the summer, you can go deep sea fishing for Tuna offshore. Trolling is the most popular technique, and captains run trips that last anywhere from a half day to a full day Tuna-chasing affair.

Freshwater fishing here is seriously exciting, too. Oregon boasts the Columbia River, as well as the Willamette, Clackamas, Nestucca, and Umpqua Rivers. In summer, the Columbia is bustling with Sturgeon and Chinook Salmon. Spring sees smaller rivers fill up with Salmon and Steelhead. The Deschutes River is a Trout hotspot. Tenmile Lake boasts Rainbow Trout, Catfish, and Panfish. Light tackle is a favored technique, and trips run from half days to full days.

With such a variety of fishing grounds on offer, there are plenty of departure points to choose from. Tillamook, Coos Bay, and Astoria are hot spots for ocean fishing. Heading to the Columbia River? Charter captains depart from Astoria, Portland, and around the Bonneville Dam. For smaller rivers, you’ll find local guides posted up along the river banks. Basically, wherever you want to fish, you’ll find someone waiting to take you out!

Regeln & Vorschriften

All anglers age 12 and older must buy a fishing license to cast a line in Oregon. If you plan on fishing for Salmon, Sturgeon, or Steelhead in the Columbia River or its tributaries, you must also purchase a Columbia River Basin Endorsement.

January

In the rivers, winter fishing is all about Steelhead and Sturgeon. During January you can have great luck fishing for both species, but just be sure to check out which fish you can keep ahead of time.

February

Most Sturgeon in the Columbia River stick around Portland and Longview early in the year. Meanwhile, small streams are swarming with winter Steelhead. In bayside towns, crabbing and clamming can be excellent.

March

Oregon fishing starts to pick up momentum in March, when spring Chinook make their entrance in the rivers. Jetty fishing produces the likes of Herring, Surfperch, and Lingcod.

April

Come spring, Shad fishing in the Columbia River is extremely popular, with several million fish passing through this waterway! Winter Steelhead and spring Chinook fishing is hot, too.

May

The season for Halibut typically opens in May, making this a great time to dabble in a little bottom fishing! Trophy Sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River also kicks off, while the best of Salmon season is just ahead.

June

It’s "June Hog" season in the Columbia River, when anglers catch some of the biggest Chinook of the year. Summer Steelhead are on the scene, while more and more “Dinosaur” Sturgeon are spotted by the day.

July

Albacore Tuna fishing is usually in full swing by July, drawing many anglers to the waters offshore. This is also one of the best times to experience Oregon's deep sea fishing, when every species is biting.

August

Many anglers head to Astoria to explore Buoy 10's fishery in August. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, there’s still superb fishing to be had in the lakes, bays, and offshore.

September

It’s hard to pick a bad place for fishing in Oregon at this time of year. The Columbia River offers fall Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead, while the bays promise no shortage of surprises.

October

By October, many guides have moved to the Bonneville Dam for trophy Sturgeon fishing. Elsewhere, anglers in Portland are enjoying the fall Chinook season.

November

The season for Halibut may be closed at this time of year, but crabbing and clamming opportunities are heating up just in time to make up for it! River fishing guides are targeting winter Steelhead.

December

Walleye, Steelhead, and Sturgeon are all biting in December. So long as the rain holds off, you can have great success while crabbing in the bays!
