I was successful on my first time. Halibut are easier to catch than salmon. I met a few fishermen in Seward that were unsuccessful so I am glad I drove to Homer.
For the nonfisher people in your party consider booking in advance a flight from Homer to Katnai to see the bears catch salmon. My wife was disappointed that all flights to Katnai were full.

Do it and have fun... be flexible... we caught a 40 inch Halibut, had to release it as sport fishing guidelines the halibut has to be 38 inches or less. Salmon wasn't running, so went for Rockfish. Which were more plentiful and good for tacos. We did not have fish sent back, kept it and grilled some and froze the rest. Stayed at private residence in Juneau so could do that.

Good charters fill up early, but weather is unpredictable. Gear up for it. I'm a Scout so like to be prepared.
Rain gear, waterproof boots, layers, sunscreen, gloves, Dramamine, barf bag. Plan for 10-15 degrees cooler on the water than the shore.

I recommend Corey with Alaskan Adventure Guides. He did his best to insure we got our limits of fish. He and his mate were great and the boat was very nice. Even with the 6 hour halibut trip, you may get a lot of movement. Be prepared, if you get seasick easy. Dramamine worked good for my wife. Expect the Spit area to be crowded, but there are a good number of places to eat. Expect to pay Homer taxes on your trip. Expect processing and shipping of fish to be about $7.50 a pound.

Get there early so you are not rushed. You can get breakfast before you go out. Bring a camera for all the sites,Whittier and Prince William Sound is beautiful.

I recommend Corey with Alaskan Adventure Guides. He did his best to insure we got our limits of fish. He and his mate were great and the boat was very nice. Even with the 6 hour halibut trip, you may get a lot of movement. Be prepared, if you get seasick easy. Dramamine worked good for my wife. Expect the Spit area to be crowded, but there are a good number of places to eat. Expect to pay Homer taxes on your trip. Expect processing and shipping of fish to be about $7.50 a pound.

The fish may have not been cooperating but Capt Jared didn’t give up. I caught my first salmon in the last few minuted of the day - all thanks to efforts of our guide. What a great way to celebrate my 61st birthday! Both the boat and equipment were very well maintained and I would definitely recommend this excursion to anyone!

We love to fish and couldn’t leave Alaska without having tried to catch something. We knew with the short amount of time we had on our cruise stop and it being the end of the season our chances were not real good. Anthony took us to a few areas until we found two big ones. Had a blast, crew very experienced and knowledgeable, and even took the time to let us see some whales nearby. Just wished we could have booked the whole day. Definitely hope to fish with them again. Had a great day out on the water in Kachemak bay! It was a last minute booking and it was awesome! The captain and his mate were fun to be with, and knowledgeable and put us on the fish! The fishing started of a little slow but ended up catching over a 70 lb halibut, and two yellow eye rockfish ( my first yellow eye!) And a bunch of smaller good eaters too, Definitely will be back!

We made the Short 1hr drive from Anchorage to Willow Creek resort and from the 1st greeting I knew we were going to have a great day.
