Angeln in Oahu

Everybody knows of Oahu as the most popular Hawaii island, home of the state’s capital and Barack Obama. What anglers remember more than anything is that fishing here is off the hook. Oahu fishing charters can put you on the bite of an impressive number of species, you just have to choose what to target.

The fishing diversity of Oahu is fantastic. These warm Pacific waters are brimming with game fish and the seafloor drops to over 1,000 feet just a mile from shore. This means that monster pelagics like Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi), Marlin, Shortbill Spearfish, Wahoo (Ono), and Mahi Mahi are all in the cards.

There’s also plenty to fish for around Oahu’s vibrant reefs. You can go after Trevallies, Wrasse, and Triggerfish, or focus on bottom fishing and reel in Grouper, Snapper, and Green Jobfish. Sandy flats hide a strong population of Bonefish. You can even go freshwater fishing for Bass, Snakehead, and Tilapia.

As you can see, the variety of species you can catch in Oahu is fascinating. That’s why there’s a good number of Oahu fishing charters that can take you to them. You can go after bragworthy pelagics even on half day trips, because the fish feed so close to shore. If you want to battle your catch while your family is snorkeling, pick a combo excursion.

Honolulu is the fishing hub of the island where you’ll easily find a professional guide, and Haleiwa is another famous location.

Regeln & Vorschriften

When you’re going saltwater fishing in Oahu, you don’t need a fishing license. However, if you’re exploring freshwater, you’ll need to buy a valid license. In Oahu, it’s common to keep all the fish you catch (even Billfish) and share it with the crew, so consult your captain about their release policy.

Oahu Angelsaisonen

January

Kick off the year with some awesome offshore fishing. Bigeye Tuna are in their prime this time of year, making for great trolling and a delicious meal at the end of the day. Trevally and Snapper are also biting left and right.

February

The Billfish bite picks up in February, with huge numbers of Shortbill Spearfish and Striped Marlin. The Ahi bite is on fire, and Mahi Mahi are coming into their prime, so you won’t go hungry, and you’ll have a blast on the water.

March

Enjoy some angling action at the President's Day Fishing Tournament, if you’re interested in competitive fishing. Otherwise, you’re welcome to enjoy the fabulous pelagics bite and hook into a Striped Marlin or two.

April

The rains tend to die down by April, making for productive flats fishing. Hit the shallows for awesome Bonefishing or head to the deep to battle Ono, Ahi, and Mahi Mahi, to name a few. Over at the reefs, Trevally, Snapper, and Jobfish are biting.

May

Blue Marlin start showing up in bigger numbers in May. The Striped Marlin are still around, Spearfish can be caught well into the summer, and you know what that means – this is the perfect time for a Billfish Slam!

June

June is a great month for competitive anglers. Choose between battling Giant Trevally in the Ulua Challenge, heading offshore for the Hawaiian Open, or chasing Tuna in the Ahi Shootout. For a slower pace, hit the reefs or fish for Peacock Bass in the freshwater.

July

Billfish dominate all Oahu fishing seasons but come summer, and the Blue Marlin bite is what everyone gets excited about. In the mood to fight a monster? Head to the FADs for the chance of monster Blues weighing well over 500 pounds.

August

The high temperatures in August are no joke, but the fish don’t seem to mind. One way to beat the heat is to fish at night, targeting Tuna and Swordfish. If high temperatures don’t discourage you, anything from beach fishing to bluewater is open to you.

September

Fishing is still going strong in September, with anything from Blue Marlin to Lobster on the menu. When you’re done fishing for the day, head to the annual Aloha Festival – one of the most important events on Oahu.

October

Billfish aren’t as numerous as they are in summer, but they’re still around. If you’d rather catch your own dinner, the “Deep 7” (a combo of six different Snapper species and one Grouper) are usually back on the menu by October. It’s a challenge well worth the effort.

November

The Do or Die Fishing Tournament offers fierce competition in November. Non-competitive fishermen will have a great time targeting Bigeye Tuna, as well as all the favorite reef and bottom dwellers.

December

There’s hardly a better way to spend your winter holiday than basking in the sun, with a fishing rod in your hands. Anything from Striped Marlin and Tuna to Ehu and Bluefin Trevally can be your Christmas present.
