Fishing in Marin County

With San Francisco Bay on one side and the prolific Pacific Ocean on the other, Marin County fishing opportunities are immense. Add to that San Pablo, Drakes, and Tomales bays and you’ve got the makings of a fantastic fisherman’s haunt.

Chinook Salmon is one of the main reasons many anglers venture to Marin County – they know that the action is fantastic. Looking for more variety? Add Rockfish to your to-catch list, along with Striped Bass, White Seabass, Halibut, and Lingcod. You could even hook into Sturgeon if you come in the early spring.

The west side of Marin County is hugged by the ocean, which means all the catches mentioned above are available – only bigger. And let’s not forget about Albacore Tuna that travels through these waters in the summer. If you’d like to try out something different, go crabbing and get your share of delicious Dungeness Crab and its relatives.

The weather in Marin County is mild, which is good news, but a lot of fish are out of season, so your choice of prey is more limited than usual. Still, there’s some good action with Striped Bass and Halibut, and crabbing is in full swing.

Februar

This is the best month to target Sturgeon in San Francisco Bay and be rewarded with a brag-worthy catch. The White Seabass bite is slowly picking up, and you can also find some Stripers closer to shore.

März

The Rockfish season is finally open! If you love catching and eating different Rockfish species, as well as Lingcod, you’ll love fishing both San Francisco and San Pablo bays.

April

Things are heating up on the bays and in the ocean, and the increasing number of anglers and boats proves it. Crabbing is excellent in the spring, as well as bottom fishing for Halibut and Rockfish.

Mai

It’s Salmon time! The Chinook fishing season is finally open and it’s the event every angler in the county has been waiting for. Not to mention that just about anything is biting this time of year, so you really can’t go wrong with whatever you choose to target.

Juni
If there’s a month when Marin County fishing is at its peak, it’s June! The Salmon action is superb, Stripers are on their way back from the Delta, bottom dwellers are insatiable, and it’s just goodness all around.
Juli
Not sure what you’d like to fish for in July? You don’t need to make any hard decisions, just go after them all! A new addition is Albacore Tuna coming to the ocean waters and bringing fast and furious action with them.
August

There’s nothing quite like late summer in NorCal, especially for anglers. The weather couldn’t be better, anything from Leopard Sharks to Albies is in the cards, and there’s plenty of time to enjoy all the abundance that Marin County has to offer.

September

The Chinook fall run is at full throttle in San Francisco Bay, and there are some huge specimens out there! Striped Bass and White Seabass fishing is incredible, with bottom dwellers following close behind.

Oktober

As fall comes to the county, some species are moving away from the local waters. This is your last chance to catch  Albacore Tuna. When you get your share of ocean excitement, head to one of the bays for some first-class Salmon fishing.

November

Bottom fish love this time of year, and you can find a lot of them prowling for food. The ocean Salmon season ends this month (you can still catch them in bays), but the crabbing season begins, so there’s always something to look forward to.

Dezember

One of many great things about the Marin County fishing season is that it’s open year-round. Put on some layers, hire your favorite charter, and hit the water in search of Salmon, Rockfish, and Bass or go crabbing for a royal seafood dinner.

This trip was a boys trip to San Francisco and we decided to go fishing with Captain David. Fate has it that his deck hand was the same deck hand that helped me pick crabs at the start of crab season. The equipment was top rate, the boat was comfortable, and the instruction was clear. We walked away with more than enough fish, including a nice size halibut. Good eating!!!

Fantastic day fishing!!! The best day of fishing my son and I have ever had. Captain was awesome. Put us on fish everywhere we went. Beautiful scenery and we laughed and talked all day. The sturgeon were biting and OH my goodness do they fight!!! Great trip and I highly recommend a trip with Captain John!!! The boat is fantastic very comfortable. The trip was definitely a 10 out 10.

My two sons wanted to catch something in the bay, especially leopard shark. Weather was windy and water conditions muddy. However, Dave and Neil were great and got us into sharks despite the poor conditions. My boys had a wonderful experience. We would definitely fish with them again!

We caught so many fish within the first hour. Captain took us to a spot that didn’t disappoint. The crew was amazing. Very helpful and even gave us some historical facts of monuments near by. Captain and First mate were extremely friendly and funny. Both did the impossible to have kept us comfortable and happy. It was an amazing unforgettable memory. Thank you for everything.

Had a really special day with Captain David and his talented deckhand Neil. The weather was rainy and a bit of wind, but they really worked together as a team and were able to put us on some fish, and show off their navigational skills in low visibility dark and rainy conditions, while making the trip fun and having great conversation.
