Angeln in Great South Bay

If you find yourself in Long Island, eager to cast a line or two, there’s plenty for you to do. The Atlantic is only a short boat ride away, but if you’re still getting your sea legs, starting off easy is a good idea. This is where the Great South Bay fishing scene comes into play.

Despite its name, this is actually a 45-mile-long lagoon with relatively shallow and calm waters, thanks to the protection of the Fire Island. Here, you can come face to gills with a variety of species, including Striped Bass, Bluefish, Flounder (Fluke), Black Seabass, Scup, Tautog, Sharks, and many others.

Maybe you’re in search of the ultimate sportfishing challenge, and if that’s the case, turn your eyes to the ocean. In its deep offshore waters, you can target Tuna, Swordfish, and even Marlin. Basically, whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll find it in and around the Great South Bay.

Whatever your fishing ambitions are, you’ll have a much bigger chance of fulfilling them with a charter captain by your side. These seasoned local fishermen spend every day exploring the lagoon for the best action, and they’ll know where to take you. You can opt-in for a quick afternoon jaunt to the nearby wrecks or spend a day experiencing the thrill of the “Bluefish Blitz.” It’s up to you.

You can find a guide to your liking all up and down the bay’s shore, and some of the best spots include Babylon and Bay Shore.

Regeln & Vorschriften

While your captain will keep you in the loop about all the current regulations and daily limits, it’s up to you to buy a fishing license before your Great South Bay fishing adventure. Everything else will be taken care of so that you can focus on enjoying yourself.

January

Going fishing on the Great South Bay in January isn’t really possible since it’s very cold outside. You’ll be better off staying cozied up at home and waiting for better fishing conditions.

February

Chances are, the temperatures are still not rising, so fishing is on hold. If by any chance you catch a good sunny day in February, use it to target Cod, because they’re very active this time of year.

March

Even though the spring is slowly creeping in and days are getting warmer and longer, fish are still not that interested in what you have to offer. The only exception is Cod, which doesn’t seem to mind frigid waters.

April

The first couple of months were slow on the fishing front, but come April, and everything changes significantly. The Flounder season is open and Stripers are out and about, as well as the cold-resistant Cod.

May

The spring is in full swing, which is good news for anglers and the fish. You’ll find a lot of hungry Black Drum on your line, as well as some premium Striped Bass and Flounder. You might even stumble upon a Shark or two.

June

There’s a lot to look forward to in June, both within the Great South Bay and beyond. In the lagoon, Bluefish, Stripers, Flounder, and Black Drum are all there for the taking, and in the ocean, you can find gorgeous Bluefin Tuna.

July

This is easily one of the best fishing months on the Great South Bay. Whether you’re in the mood for some Shark action or fishing for Black Seabass, Bluefish, Flounder, and Striped Bass, you’ve come to the right place.

August

The Scup season is open, so this beautiful species joins the already long line of possible catches. The waters are warm, the weather is gorgeous, and anything from Bluefish in the bay to Tuna in the ocean is biting.

September

The Tautog season is one of the most expected events on the bay, and you’ll see a lot of boats reeling them in left and right. Whatever your target is – Scup or Black Seabass, Striper or Flounder, Bluefish, or Sharks – it’s out there for the taking.

October

As the weather takes a turn, so does the fishing. Every day it gets a bit colder on the bay, but there are still active species for you to chase. Black Seabass, Striped Bass, Bluefish, and Tautog are all on the menu.

November

It’s getting increasingly more difficult to go fishing even in the calm waters of the Great South Bay because it’s very cold outside. If you brave the late fall weather, you’ll be rewarded with very good Striped Bass and Tautog bite.

December

If you’re out in the water in December, you’re a champion! For some anglers, passion for the sport beats the cold, and on a mild day, they can enjoy solid bottom fishing for Cod, Tautog, and Black Seabass.
