Types of Fishing

With the Atlantic waters just on the other side of the OBX, there’s no end to what you can target when fishing in and around the Albemarle Sound. Whether on the Sound itself, fishing the surf, or heading offshore, you’re in for a treat

Inshore Fishing

The Sound itself boasts plenty of fish for a productive day out. The still waters are a great place to get to grips with a rod and reel, while avid anglers can also get their fix of fishing by filling the boat.

Hit the backcountry’s shallows and you’ll come across some tough-fighting Largemouth Bass and delicious Crappie, or fish the main basin for Flounder, Redfish, Weakfish, and many more. Follow the prized Striped Bass all over the place, with winter being a particularly fruitful season.

Nearshore Fishing

Head south from the sound and, after navigating Roanoke Island, you’ll come to Oregon Inlet. Fish here or along the Outer Banks’ famous beaches and you’ll take advantage of the Gulf Stream’s incredible effect on local marine life. Some true monsters inhabit these waters, so try bottom fishing the reefs or troll the open waters and you could find yourself battling it out with Cobia, False Albacore, Mackerel, and more.

Offshore Fishing

If you’ve got some experience with a rod and reel in your hand, then the chance to go offshore is irresistible. With the Gulf Stream just over 30 miles out from the inlet, you’ll get to test your skills and strength against some of the ocean’s most prized creatures on an 8-hour trip!

Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi all call these waters home at some point during the year. Troll the open waters for the bite of these beasts and get ready for the fight of a lifetime.

When to Go

With excellent fishing year-round, there’s never a bad time to go fishing in the Albemarle Sound. While the offshore waters may be a little choppy in winter, the calm inshore waters will cater to your fishing needs.

Februar

Make the most of the quiet seas, if you can, and take a trip offshore to battle it out with Bluefin Tuna. Don’t worry if the weather’s bad, though, as Bluefish join the Flounder and Stripers inshore, too.

März

Spring has sprung and the fishing is starting to warm up too. Tuna season really takes off and a trip out to the deep waters of the Gulf Stream and beyond will see you filling the boat with some tasty treats.

April

You can feel the season start to kick in as April dawns. Get your practice in for high season as you bottom fish the surf or sound, or troll the offshore waters to land anything from a Flounder to a Wahoo.

Mai

Mahi Mahi joins the offshore party, giving you an even better chance of landing something delicious to take home from the deep, while the Drum run kicks off inshore, leaving you with a dilemma of where to fish.

Juni

There’s no doubt that peak season is upon the Sound, as the bay is crowded with boats. With plenty of fish to go round, there’s no need to worry, and you can even catch a glimpse of a Marlin offshore.

Juli

Push yourself to the limit in July as you go after White Marlin, Blue Marlin, and Sailfish offshore. These tough-fighting Billfish will do anything to get off the end of your line, so get ready for the fight of your life.

August

There’s a reason why Manteo’s Pirate’s Cove Billfish Fishing Tournament is held in August. Head out to the deep and join in the serious fishing as you try to land a trophy-sized catch for big rewards.

September

Go after the last of the pelagics offshore as the season reaches its climax. Monster Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel will offer great angling options just beyond the surf, so come and extend your summer.

Oktober

It’s not over yet! In fact, the inshore fishing is better than ever before. Join the annual Manteo Rotary Inshore Slam and go after Stripers, Flounder, Drum, and Trout as you test your bottom fishing skills.

November

While the weather may be getting colder, the fishing is still red-hot. Hit the shallows of the Albemarle Sound in November and you’ll find plenty of delicious fish to take home for the holiday season.

The marina in Wanchese has a large selection for fishing guides. The marina has an excellent restaurant that is actually quite reasonable in price for the quality of food served. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the local community and was very instructive in the techniques used to fish artificial baits.

Riptide Charters

The best time to fish Manteo is April May and June. You might need to dodge high winds and hurricanes after July through November. Good news though, Manteo has inshore opportunities in the sound for anglers who love to bring home tasty catches. Speckled Trout and Red Drum are GREAT eating fish. So are sheepshead and Striped Bass.

10/10 trip. The boat itself was amazing and Buddy and Watson were great. Did everything they could to get us on some fish and when we were on them they did everything they could to stay on top of them. Highly recommend anyone booking a trip with these guys. Won't be disappointed.

The captain will do everything he can to make sure you have a great day. He had some electrical issues with some upgrades he made to the boat and did not feel safe taking us on an offshore trip. He was very apologetic about the situation and he lined us up to go out on another boat that was not booked for that day, he even came back to the dock and greeted us after the trip to see how our trip went.

My 12 year old son and I had an amazing time with Captain Walker. We brought in a nice haul and my son was super excited. Captain Walker was super patient with my son and was very helpful teaching him how to cast. The pickup in Duck was very convenient as well since we were staying in Corolla. Perfect trip for a small group.

Booked a day trip with riptide charters while visiting OBX. The water was still a little on the cool side but Capt Randy gave us a 110%. He was there early with a clean boat ready to roll. He is very knowledgeable of the area and what to look for. I would highly recommend if you are considering a inshore trip. Looking forward to fishing with him again once the water warms up.

Capt. Jonathan put us on the fish. The weather report was wrong. The wind was supposed to be about 5 knots, but it was actually about 15 knots. Conditions grew worse as the trip continued. I have used JW Charters before, I highly recommend them.
