Fishing in Playa del Carmen
Before it turned into the world-famous vacation spot we know and love, Playa del Carmen was a humble fishing village. Located opposite Cozumel, the migratory routes of offshore species are effectively “channeled” right past this little town. Over the years, this has caused the seafloor to form a steep valley. What does this mean? Hop aboard one of the Playa del Carmen fishing charters on offer, and you’ll reach deep waters just 5 miles from shore!
It’s fair to say that incredible deep sea fishing action is this town’s bread and butter. Playa del Carmen is positioned right near the Great Mayan Reef, which brings plenty of marine life with it. You’ll generally start your trip about five minutes after leaving the dock, by dropping your lines around the reef. These waters are home to Wahoo, Tuna varieties, Amberjack, and Kingfish.
If it’s big game angling action you’re after, you’ll be thrilled to discover that many charters in Playa del Carmen implement a “Billfish hookup” rule. Basically, local captains insist on their guests battling at least one Marlin or Sailfish out of this port! Although the prime Billfish season runs between March–September, hookups are common year-round. And that’s not all you can catch, either – the mighty Mahi Mahi inhabits these waters too.
As deep waters can be reached on a short journey, you’ll find deep sea fishing trips starting at four hours, and lasting anywhere to eight hours. Shorter trips are suitable for newbies, families, and fishermen on a tighter schedule, whereas longer trips are the perfect option for anglers looking to get that Billfish hookup!

The only thing about these boats is that they're smaller than the big fishing charters. If it's windy (but not so windy that the trip needs to be cancelled), the boat can rock a bit if you stop/slow down to do bottom fishing. That might affect people who are prone to motion sickness.

Don’t go in thinking you’re gonna catch fish right away. Sometimes it can take a while. For us it was 2hrs until we caught the white Marlin. But it was worth the wait. I’ll take the quality over the quantity.

The crew does a lot for you so it's very easy fishing. They almost catch the fish and let you pull it up. That was very different than what I am used to but it was cool.

Book directly to the boat skipper. My trip was a family Xmas present as I mentioned that was booked up at home. Once at the hotel resort you’ll get lads selling all manor of days out. I enquired about fishing, the costs were 2-3 times the price booking directly to the likes of Alfonso! And that’s a cost that I couldn’t afford. If Alfonso hadn’t of been booked up for the rest of my trip I’d have hired him again!!

Expect to enjoy bottom fishing for trigger fish. Be prepared to catch barracuda while trolling and amberjack fish a number of different ways. You are more than welcome to bring and use your own equipment. It is a beach entry into the boat so be prepared to get your feet wet.

The water may be rough out at sea. Dramamine is a safe better to ensure a good time. I didn't barf but there were times I wanted to. The boats are easy to get to and everyone is very friendly. The sun will also get you if you're not careful

After the captain making the right decision to move dates due to bad weather which was a great call on his part we got out on the water and got into a few black finn tuna for the afternoon, had a good time, boat is well equipped and a friendly crew kept it all running smoothly! Look forward to booking again and hooking into a sailfish!

My gf and I booked this and captain was very informative. Kept us updated and very nice. We tried for sailfish but none were biting, tried for barracuda and caught 1 Spanish macreal. DELICIOUS!!! cavieche was the best I’ve ever had. Also caught some red snapper. The crew was awesome tried very hard even tho the fish weren’t cooperative. I would book this trip again.

Great day! Winds were tough from North limiting deep sea fishing so we found calmer waters in a protected area, jigged for Red Snapper and Grouper. Used a Bronco fish caught for bait on a bigger rig off the boat and got a nice Barracuda. Finished the trip with some great snorkeling, saw a Stingray and plenty of fish and returned to boat for some delicious Ceviche with the Barracuda caught an hour prior. Great day!

We went out in late March with our 8 & 11 y/o sons. Started with trolling for a couple hours before fishing the bottom over a shipwreck. We only caught a couple small fish, one of which was used for a bait fish that landed a huge red snapper at the end of the day! Estimated to be 3 1/2-4 ft and 50-60 lbs. Had a barracuda on at one point that snapped off. Highly recommend Edmundo and his crew member Gustavo. Great team, very responsive to communication. We booked 24 hours prior to trip.

This was the best charter fishing trip my wife and I have ever been on. The capital and mates were very knowledgeable, professional, and supportive. They took the time to show us how the rigs were set up, the bait and reel setup, etc. I caught a 100 plus pound white marlin and my wife caught a 25 pound wahoo, plus 2 trigger fish. Couldn't have had more fun.

Unfortunately we didn't have any luck the day of out fishing trip, we didn't catch anything, not even a bite from a fish 😕 the captain and crew were very welcoming and they tried but no luck. They made us some snacks that were delicious. Too bad we didn't have any luck and didn't catch anything.

We had a great time snorkeling and fishing. With one hour left of our trip we reeled in a HUGE sailfish. It was absolutely amazing experience. After 30 mins of reeling in he snapped the line right at the boat!

Fishing wasn’t great for all species, but the Captain and crew kept us on Bonita’s the whole morning. Wife and both daughters caught several fish and that was the goal of the trip. Had a great time.

The crew was amazing! We caught 12 bonito, 1 barracuda, and several red snapper. One of my kids was seasick pretty bad and they were great adjusting to our needs. They took us to a beach to hike to a cenote, explore for seashells, and guide us snorkeling!! We had a blast!! ❤️❤️❤️

Fishing was a little slow that day. He ensured that everyone in the family fished. Carching red snapper on the bottom to tolling for sale fish. They tried none stop to put us on fish durring a slower time of year! The largest pluss for this is that he let us fish for ourselves, unlike some other charters where they do all the work and just let you reel in the fish. A+ in my book!

Fishing was great for the hour we were out. It was my wife and my two little boys 5 and 7. We chose to stay close to shore to make sure no one would get sick. We were catching fish right away and had 14 trigger fish, 1 doctor fish, and one bronco fish in the boat in the first hour. My wife and boys all got sick so we headed in after an hour and a half. Still totally worth it.

The crew was great and explained what our best options were for catching fish during this time of year. Among several other boats, we were one of few to catch any fish. The crew did a great job of putting us in the perfect spots. We ended up catching 12 trigger fish and had several others which we didn’t land. Absolutely would recommend this boat and crew to anyone looking for the best chance of catching fish!
