Three rivers flow to the ocean in Quepos, Costa Rica, and we all know what that means – excellent fishing! Hit the bays and estuaries inshore and get your fill of action, but that’s not all! The nearshore reefs and deep waters offshore are all within reach, and there are plenty of Quepos fishing charters waiting to take you to them. Come and target some of the most prized fish in the world!

Don’t believe us? Roosterfish grow to incredible sizes inshore, and that’s just the beginning. Jacks, Snook, and Mackerel are also possible catches! Hit the reefs for non-stop bottom fishing action, with Snappers and Groupers stealing the show and your line here.

However, if you’re looking for the fight of your life and a real trophy to boot, you’ll want to head offshore. The deep waters of the Pacific hold plenty of monster Marlin, stunning Sailfish, and impressive Wahoo. And not only that, but you can also go after Tuna and Mahi Mahi to bring back for a beachside BBQ.

Inshore and nearshore trips can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day, with shorter trips being most suitable for families and beginners. However, serious anglers simply must take advantage of the offshore bite that goes on year-round. Can you think of anything more romantic than cruising out to the beautiful beaches of Tortuga Island next Valentine's Day? How about battling monster pelagics offshore? OK, Maybe not romantic, but certainly fun!

März

March is the driest month of the year in Costa Rica, making for great fishing both inshore and offshore. Sight fish for Roosterfish and Snook inshore, or troll for Billfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi offshore.

April

April is tournament season in Quepos, with the IGFA World Championships taking center stage among the many Billfishing competitions in the area. This also makes April a very expensive time to visit.

Mai

Blue Marlin really hit their stride in Quepos by May, joined by big Yellowfin Tuna and the permanent populations of Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo. The reefs and shallows are also packed with great fish.

Juni

The high chance of rain can sometimes wash out the best fishing offshore, but you can always hit the reefs for some tasty Snapper. If you're up for a fight, fish the river mouths for big Roosterfish.

Juli

The rain usually drops off slightly in July, ahead of the biggest downpours of rainy season. Blue and Black Marlin are both around in big numbers this time of year, so take your chance and get out there!

August

August is much the same as any month in Quepos, meaning that it's amazing! Fish inshore for Roosterfish, Snook, and Jacks, hit the reefs for Snapper, Grouper, and Barracuda, or head offshore for big Billfish.

September

All of Central America gained independence on the same day in 1821. These days, September 15 is celebrated with parades, fairs, music, and dancing. Combine your angling adventure with a fiesta!

Oktober

The bite may slow up offshore in October, but things never get dull inshore. You could spend the rest of your life here and never get bored of the awesome inshore species like Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper.

November

The rain finally drops off in November, making heading offshore more feasible. As always, you'll be met by a great mixed group of pelagic species, including Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Marlin.

Dezember

Beautiful green countryside, a sunny 85 degrees, world-class fishing.. if Quepos isn't at the top of your list for the holiday season it certainly should be! It won't exactly be a White Christmas, but you'll manage.

Be prepared for afternoon heat. PRE hydrate. If prone to seasickness, reconsider. Dont drink too much alcohol, makes it hard to fight big fish. Remember some fish are compulsory catch and release. Billfish often explode spectacularly out of the water, keep cameras ready. The biology of the ocean is not under your control; if fish dont hit thats life. Likewise they may hit big time; be ready. Crews are lifelong experts, trust them to do a brilliant job. Pura vida and good fishing.

If you’re really into catching lots of fish you should book for Costa Rica trip around the time that particular fish is running. We had hoped for tuna, but this wasn’t the time to catch tuna. Communication with the captain is essential. We were very happy with the Mahi we caught.

Sunscreen and hydration!!! Surprisingly, there were no bugs this time of year. Finally, sun protection and water!!! The sun here is no joke. Long pants and sleeves are best. And a good hat and glasses.

Elier and Antony worked their tails off to find us fish on a tough day of fishing. We eventually got into some yellowfin and picked up a couple. They really went the extra mile for us and were very pleasant to be around. Antony even prepared a plate of fresh yellowfin with avocado, lime, and soy sauce that was amazing!!

Captain Ricardo and first mate Christian are excellent! Ricardo is a good coach and is patient. He knew i wanted to check the Rooster Fish box and set out immediately to pursue the fish i wanted most. I went 2 for 4 on the Roosters. He did not waste time in any spot which was unproductive for more than 20-30 minutes and found the fish. A great day, 2 Roosters, 1 large Jack, and 2 Black Tips. We dropped at least 3 big Spanish Mackerel.

We really enjoyed this trip. Jose and his helper worked very well together to make sure we had a great trip. A couple of Jose's friends were out in other boats and they didn't catch anything. I'm glad we were with Jose so my husband could reel in his sail fish.

We had an amazing day out on this boat. The open bow made for much more room than most boats. Also a very smooth ride on the water. Captain did nothing but try to get us into fish, and we were successful. Highly recommend this boat, we will book again.

We set out on a 3/4 tour and succeeded in catching a sailfish within 2 hours of fishing. after trying a bit longer in the same area we decided to chase the tuna schools and successfully landed 6 tuna between me and my wife. Our captain Chicho, and mate Roy kept the cervezas flowing and the piñas juicy. We crushed our Burritos on the way in and enjoyed the crew's company.

Avid saltwater fisherman for many years but first trip to Quepos, José and David (first mate) are a class act. The dynamic duo know their stuff and where the fish are. Caught snook, mangrove snapper, wahoo and more! I’ll definitely be back, already looking to November when the BIG Mahi come in !!

We went out looking for rooster fish, snook, snapper etc. didn’t have a lot of luck the first few hours and trolled with 4 rods out heading home and picked up two Spanish mackerel. Overall good trip but I think they made the best of a slow day.

Ricardo and Christian worked well together and MADE SURE we caught fish. Two Rooster fish, one large mangrove snapper and two red (mutton) snappers-these were perfect sized to be cooked whole. We had 4 meals from the fresh fish we caught.

Eric and his crew took us out for a 7 hr offshore charter. They we caught several tuna early then went in search of something better. We reeled in a large sail fish which was the highlight. Hooked 3 more but lost them in the battle. The crew was very attentive. Great lunch and plentiful drink options..

We enjoyed our family fishing trip ( kids ages 9, 12) with Ricardo on Idra 2 very much! He was a great captain, provided help when we needed it and stepped back when we didn't. We caught barracuda and Spanish mackerel. Restaurant at the marina cooked the mackerel for us-- it was delicious. I would highly recommend!
