Ecuador’s geography is as diverse as its fishing. From the Galapagos Islands to the Sierra highlands and Amazonian jungle – this country’s got it all. Fishing in Ecuador is as exciting as you can imagine. Whether you’re looking to target big game fish or go after some of the most exotic-looking freshwater species, you’ve got to check Ecuador off of your bucket list!

Types of Fishing

Ecuador has a wide variety of possibilities for any type of angler. Its coast has a tropical climate, keeping water temperatures relatively warm year-round. This puts Ecuador among one of the best places in the world for deep sea fishing.

Its mountains and jungle also provide an array of opportunities for fly and light tackle fishermen. You can go up against some of the toughest fighting fish on the planet.

Deep Sea

One of the best spots to go offshore fishing in Ecuador is the town of Salinas, located on a peninsula that juts out into the Pacific. Just a few miles off the coast, the Humboldt Current funnels big game fish right through these waters.

Pelagic species such as Blue and Striped Marlin, as well as Sailfish, and Bigeye Tuna are abundant here, making it possible to hook multiple trophy-sized fish in one day.

The Galapagos Islands are located about 600 miles off the coast. Opportunities for deep sea fishing out here are unlimited, with likely catches of Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Striped Marlin, Skipjack, Bonito, Wahoo, and Yellowtail Amberjack. Bottom species such as Mullet and Cubera Snapper, as well as Grouper and California Sheephead, also thrive here.

Rivers and Lakes

Rivers and lakes in the Andes are stocked with large numbers of Trout which thrive in higher altitude climates. Largemouth Bass can also be found in freshwaters at higher elevations, such as in the Laguna de San Pablo, next to the town of Otavalo.

A variety of Piranha species are common in the rivers of the Amazon jungle, but the Peacock Bass reigns supreme. Anglers from far and wide come here to test their skills against this hard-fighting fish. Other highly sought-after species in this region include Catfish, Arapaima, and Payara.

Need to Know

As of now, you can fish recreationally in Ecuador without a license. Keep in mind, however, that the country’s charter industry is still in its early stages of development, so regulations could change. Your best bet is to keep up to date, stop by the tourism bureau, or ask a local guide before you head out. Fishing permits are needed for protected waters, but your guide will usually cover this for you

Charters and guides usually provide tackle and bait on their trips. Just be sure to bring extra sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and bug repellent, and you’re good to go.

Get ready to discover Ecuador and its amazing fishing opportunities. Take a look at some of the different regions, find a guide that’s right for you, and get ready for an exciting adventure below the Equator!

Juan and his crew Luis and Jorge were great! We had a terrific time on the boat ,the fishing was slow but the crew did everything they could including going out 50 miles to try for blue Marlin. We did catch a nice Derado and getting to know Juan was an extra benefit. The boat and gear were first class and would recommend La Chiqui to anyone who wants a great fishing experience in the Galapagos or off the coast of Equador.
