Our experience with Captain Shawn and Jason was amazing! We did the half day, AM. 4hours started at 6am. They were super excited to be there and explained safety and expectations thoroughly. Remember we’re fishing, not catching. We did catch a nice 175lb blue marlin though! Shawn was great at explaining where we were going and how certain currents of water, schools of fish and even how birds could help us catch some fish! Jason switched out lures a few times as well to see if they liked some different colours (turns out purple in October did us the trick!) They were so great at working out our braided line when reeling in the marlin and great with the encouragement. At the end of our charter they took us back to the harbour and told us to wait for the PERFECT photo op and took care of everything (cleaning and filleting) when it came to taking home about 3-4 dinners worth of the marlin. For our first time deep sea fishing, they were the best. We highly recommend anyone who wants to try out deep sea fishing to go to Makana Lani.

I recently went on a fishing trip with Captain Shawn and Kenny, and while we didn’t land any game fish this time, the experience was still fantastic! The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about fishing, providing great tips and making the whole trip enjoyable.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and spending the day on the water was incredibly relaxing. The guide’s enthusiasm and expertise turned what could have been a disappointing day into a memorable adventure. We were treated to beautiful views and interesting local insights, making the journey itself a highlight.

Overall, it was a great day out, filled with camaraderie and the joy of being on the water. Sometimes, it’s not just about the catch but the experience, and this trip was a perfect example of that. I would definitely recommend Makana Lani for anyone looking for a well-organized and enjoyable fishing experience. Looking forward to my next trip with them!

The trip was excellent. The Captains did a fantastic job of getting multiple lines in the water to maximize our trolling efforts. They kept an eye out for birds feeding on bait fish as well as tuna feeding on the surface. When certain setups were not working they switched to try something else.
Towards the end of the charter, BAM, Fish On! We landed an ~ 120lb ahi tuna. I don’t know who was more excited, us or the Captains! Great day and great experience on the water. Highly recommend these guys!

I had the privilege to fish with Shawn and Jason. We were targeting Ono, and while we didn’t catch any of those they remained patient with my 7 year old son while he asked questions and tried to get on fish.

At the end of a trip they made a special deal out of catching something so my boy could smile while reeling in a fish, and they did it four times. One of which was a Snapper which will be eaten. I highly recommend these guys!

My 10 year old Dtr said “it was really fun and cool experience “. She called it “wack a mole” when getting the fish on the boat and in the fish bag.  We were put on a Wahoo within 30 minutes of lines in the water!!  Jason and Shawn were very educated and helpful with getting lines out of the water and figuring out the timing between reeling all 3 wahoo in and moving aside for safety purposes.  Even my wife (who usually just reads on fishing trips) loved it !  I reluctantly admit my wife caught the bigger fish 😁.  We grilled The wahoo the same day for lunch and it was fantastic.  You can’t beat this 4 hour fishing trip for the money!
